Come 2004, how­ ever, its 460 b.h.p. is bettered by the latest slew of junior supercar pretenders and the Vanquish looked overblown and over­ priced compared to the svelte 450 b.h.p. With a maximum speed in excess of 200 m.p.h. from its 6.0- litre V12, this Vanquish is seri­ ous stuff. The sprint to 60 m.p.h. drops by 0.2 seconds to 4.6 seconds and a sub 10-second sprint to 100 m.p.h. is easily attainable. The standard 460 b.h.p. Van­


quish was already a desirable car, albeit one in danger of being engulfed by the gathering power battle in the supercar class. The S rectifies things to a certain extent, but one cannot help but wonder if Aston Martin is chas­ ing the German powerhouses when it would best be served dif­ ferentiating itself in terms of quality and bespoke tactility.
