h is is the time of year when people consider the seasonal decoration of their homes.
Christmas time is certainly a
time for decoration so why not make it more permanent? If it's to be a DIY project,
get a book and study if. Look round the stores and see what is on the market. Be methodical. Plan the work and cost it care fully before you begin. Make sure the work is within your scope. If you lack special tools and equipment, consider hiring them unless you feel you’ll have a great deal of need for them in the future. Tools are best bought, as are some small pieces of equipment. Save on the larger, more expensive items, ladders especially, by hir ing them and you'll also solve the storage problem. Think of improvements you
can make as you go. Wall lights can be put in before you cover the walls. You could add cov
ing, a ceiling rose or brass light switch and electric point plates. You could have more points put in as well. Where wall coverings are concerned you may want something very different. Paper and vinyl are about in vast selections but there are other possibilities. Cork tiles in a range of colours and finishes are attractive and warm. Timber cladding looks beautiful and will last for years and years. Sisal or raffia panels can look very exotic and are wonderful for hiding wall blemishes. Lam inated panels can also look good if they are fitted imaginatively in small panels to give the effect of genuine old wall panelling. If your home is comparative
ly new, you may feel a plain colourwash overlaid \vith sten cilling would be the very best thing. Always remember, what ever the finish, preparation is all important to the final effect, so don't be afraid to put in extra time on this.

the secular point of view. It is however undoubtedly a
T
time of very hard work, espe cially for those with families to cater for. There’s the planning, the shopping, the home to be decorated and the food pre pared, on top of which, normal daily life still has to go on. The bulk of all this work still
falls heavily on the shoulders of mum, who, by the time Christ mas Day arrives, is probably longing for nothing more festive than a glass of something strong and a deep, comfortable armchair in front of the telly. But, there is still Christmas dinner to cook and serve and it is one of the most demanding meals of the year, particularly if the family have all come to stay. The answer is to relieve her,
or whoever else is doing the catering, of the whole job by eating out on Christmas Day. Now eating out is always
something of an occasion, whatever the celebration. Eat ing out on Christmas Day makes it doubly special. First the ambience will be perfect - a comfortable restaurant suitably decorated. Next you can depend on having delicious, fes tive food perfectly prepared and even more perfectly served. ^ Attentive and friendly wait
ing staff pander to your every whim, and the company of other diners simply adds to the festive atmosphere. Best of all, and often overlooked, there will be no need to clear away - always a boring and ponderous task at the end of a heavy meal when you really don’t feel at all like working.
h e r e is .something, really special about Christmas, whether you look on it from the spiritual or
Eating out on Christmas
Day is generally becoming more and more popular among families where there is no longer someone always at home to do the catering. It is the perfect solution for busy people who want to enjoy a traditional cele bration. Because it is so popu lar however, you do need to book up fast. And the larger the party you intend to take out, the sooner you should book. It’s one thing for a restaurant to squeeze a couple in at the last minute, but six, 10 or more? Impossible! Pop round your favourite
restaurants as soon as possible, those at which you enjoy Sun day lunch are good places to start. Examine the menus, con sider the options and be sure of the price. If you like what you see, don’t hesitate, lay down your deposit and book. Don’t forget to mention if
there are any special dietary requirements, most caterers will do what you ask if you give them warning. Don’t forget if there are any special wines you fancy and whether you will want them cooled. And don’t forget the number of children there will be in your party, and their ages. Many caterers pro vide special treats for children on Christmas Day, but they need to know in advance. They may also need warning if they are expected to provide special seating such as high chairs or space for a wheelchair. Both require a little more space and can affect the way the tables are
set out. Finally, do take note of the
time the meal is to be served. If you want your Christmas Din ner to be absolutely perfect, you must arrive on time.
