Richard bags a hat-trick of prizes

RICHARD Shoveltpn bagged a hat-trick of awards at Chatbum Cricket Club’s annual presentation evening. He was named first team player of the season as the

side finished in third spot in the Craven and District League Second Division. On top of that, he added the first team batting

prize, as well as the club’s best batting performance honour. Paul Whittaker picked up both the Clubman of the

Year and the Presideiit’s award, while Chris Wadding- ton was second team player of the season and young player of the year. Both the first team bowling prize and duck award

went to Stephen Booth, TOth Ted Topham picking up both the batting honour and captain’s award for the second string. The Chairman’s award went to Tim Boyd-Martin,

while John Lockley conjured up the best bowling per formance, and John Moore stole the first team field ing prize. The second team bowling and fielding awards went

to Steven Braithwaite and Dave Laakin respectively. The event was held at the Brown Cow in Chatbum,

mth chairman Joe Woodworth thanking both players and committee for their hard work. And aside from his double awards, Paul Whittaker received special praise for his all-round efforts.

Roefield miss put

A TOUGH game for Roefield Leisure Under 9s saw them go down 4-1 at Barrowford Celtic Blue. After going a goal behind early on, they were only

brightly with the home side opening the scoring, before Liam Anderson and Steve Tandy put Clitheroe ahead. Matt Binney then fired

home to put them 3-1 up, before Ma tt Sedgewick curled in a fourth on half time. Tandy was to add a fur

ther three in the second half, with man of the match Anderson complet ing his hat-trick, and Bin-

(^ney adding his second. ^ Tom Webh and Joe

Ward netted one each to complete the rout. Wolves Under 14s . .3

Rossendale Valley . .1 WOLVES were made to work hard to gain all th re e p o in ts in th is game of two halves. Despite plenty of pos

session, the locals’ War- burton’s League side could not find a way through, and conceded midway through the first half.

But the second period

saw Wolves dominate pro ceedings, with substitute Daniel Meyler levelling matters. A further brace from

Matthew Oakley complet ed the win, with Simon Lakeland receiving the man of the match award. Wolves Under 15s Red 9

Osivaldiwistle Villa 0 FOUR goals from M a tt Baines helped Wolves progress to the second round of the cup a t the expense

of

Oswaldtwistle Villa. The locals started a lit tle sluggishly and several

denied further goals by the excellence of man of the match Jack Gaffney. Goalkeeper Elliott Shepherd made some excellent

saves, hut they eventually conceded a second goal just before the break. Roefield came out fighting after the restart with

Lewis Bilbie firing home a consolation before two more goals killed off any hope of a fightback.

WHALLEY Pumas Under 15s’ hard season contin ued with a 7-1 defeat at the hands of Lammack. They found themselves 2-0 down mthin seven min

utes, before falling further behind on the half hour. Whalley pulled one back with the best goal of the

match when Ashan Iqbal smashed a shot into the roof of the net from an almost impossible angle. However, after the break, Lammack killed off any hope of a comeback with four unanswered goals.

game, Clitheroe were only ^ two places and three points ahead of Lancaster, but this performance made them appear a different class. Clitheroe opened the

scoring inside the first minute when Anna Grif fiths put Rachel Walmsley through on goal. Clitheroe dominated the

fist half, with Lancaster having no shots on target. By the time the whistle

was blown for half-time, Clitheroe were 5-0 up and Griffiths had scored her hat-trick. Jacqui Ashley scored the

other goal of the half. The second half started

the match Charlie Collinge, two from Ben White and one each from Charlie Jackson, Tom and Douglas Grimes. A game played on a

chances went begging before Baines began the rout. Sam Sieczkowski, Simon

Holden, Henri Lawson and James Dickinson also got on the scoresheet, along with an own goal. Baines also picked up

the man of the match award for his efforts. Junior Clarets.......... 0 Wolves Under 12s . .2 WOLVES reached the semi-final of the cup for the second year running a f te r v ic to ry over Junior Clarets. A goal in each half

proved enough, as the

locals controlled the game for long periods. The first goal came from

the boot of Meyler as his shot from the right wing was too strong for the keeper. Despite some tireless

running up front, man of the match Astin was unable to add to his goal tally. But the match was

made safe when Hutchins headed in a Clarkson cor ner in the second half. Haslingden ............... 3 Wolves Under 13s . .8 WOLVES marched onto their sixth consec

utive league win a t the weekend, b e a t in g Haslingden Juniors a t Haslingden Sports Cen tre. The young Wolves

found themselves in an unfamiliar situation at the break, trailing 3-2 through a strong first half perfor mance from their oppo nents. However, the Wolves

regrouped and reshuffled the team arid began to set about the business of showing their opponents why they sit on top of the league. Through overwhelming

heavily soaked pitch made life difficult for both teams. Wolves Rangers U12s2 AKZO Yellow .......... 7 GOALS by D ec lan Bradshaw an d M a rk Davies were not enough to h a l t Wolves’ losing run of six games th a t leaves them rooted a t the b o t tom of th e league. Luck is clearly not on

the side of Wolves at the moment, having hit the post twice through Davies, Holden saving a penalty then seeing the rebound scored and several other shots just going past the wrong side of the post. Man of the match was

the outstanding Gabriel Storey whose defensive work was awesome.

in the same vein, with Clitheroe having wave after wave of attacks. Walmsley scored two

more goals to get her hat- trick and debutante Helen Thwaite scored the last ^ goal.

The best goal of the

game came from Pauline Moreby, who hammered the ball into the net from just inside the D 10 min- ( ■ utes from the end. To Lancaster’s credit

they continued to battle thoughout the game, and put Clitheroe under pres sure in the last five min utes as they tried for a consolation goal. Despite this effort, the

goal never came, mainly due to Alison Heaton at left back, who had a great game and received the man of the match award. The club would once

again like to take this opportunity to thank the Rose and Crown, Clitheroe, for their kind generosity in sponsoring the club a new strip. Anyone interested in

joining the club should come to training, held from 8-9 p.m. on a Wednesday night, a t ^

Ashton Under Lyne .23 Clitheroe....................13 THIS below-par friendly performance

from

Clitheroe brought them crashing to ground after the previous week’s excel lent victory. With four important

league games coming up in the next five weeks, this was a poor and unsatisfac tory preparation. ’The forwards made hard

work of the set piece areas, while in the loose they showed a little more zest. The three-quarters

coped well enough in defence, but offered pre cious little to trouble the Ashton backs. Too often the wrong

option was taken, or the most simple of passing moves would break down due to poor basic skills. However, there were

another try, there was some consolation when Graves again crashed over from short range to achieve some respectabili ty to the scoreline. Clitheroe must improve

significantly for Saturday's clash with Colne and Nel-
