w in n in g ways Grindleton Res. . . .5 Cononley Reserves .1 G R I N D L E T O N returned to winning ways in emphatic fash ion against Cononley. After the disappoint

ment of handing Ingle- ton their first win of the season, a rare goal from David Turner put Grindleton 1-0 up after 10 minutes. And well-struck

goals from Kelsall and Doherty put the home side 3-0 ahead at half time. Cononley pulled one

back early on in the second half, but two) goals from Grindleton substitute Dakin sealed the points. Cononley never gave

up trying in very heavy conditions, and good goalkeeping and a little good fortune earned Grindleton number one Booth the man-of-the- match award.

All Blacks deny locals double win

Colne and Nelson . . . .13 Clitheroe .....................® A FIERCELY determined Colne side prevented local rivals Clitheroe from doing the double over them, and in so doing avenged the early season reverse at the hands of the Littlemoor

men. As in most derby match

es, this game was closely fought and keenly contest

ed. In spite of torrential

rain almost flooding the surface, the pitch played remarkably well, but the ball in contrast was some times like trying to grasp a slippery eel on a windy

day. The town team were

boosted by the return of Owain Jones a t scrum half, allowing skipper Dave Watson to return to the inside centre berth, and of Nathan Carlton and Bob Wilkinson in the forwards. The first half was a very

even affair. Both sides tried to get to

grips with the conditions by keeping the ball in hand, and this made for some end-to-end rugby. But i t was the All

Blacks from Colne who drew first blood with a penalty under the posts. Clitheroe soon replied

after some sustained pres sure forced one of their own, and fly half Nathan • Peel obliged to square the match at the interval. The start of the second

half was disastrous for the maroon and golds, as Colrie scored the only try of the match, which was

. especially disappointing as Clitheroe’s defence had been so resolute up until then. However, unbowed,

Clitheroe swept back upfield and pounded at the Colne line. Their scant reward was

another solitary penalty goal. For the rest of the game

compound

Clitheroe’s woes, they had a dreadful afternoon in the set piece areas. The scrum was under

big pressure and often in full steam reverse. The line out was even

worse, usually such a prof itable source of possession - hooker Roger Holmes had a miserable day with the throwing, most barn doors in the area being safe from attack. On the plus side was a

few powerful runs from wingman Alex Hough and two young replacements, Mark Curfy and Edward Thornber both made the presence felt. With the season draw

ing to a close, it is back to basics for the final few & games.

® THEY say that parents live out their dreams through their children, Q hoping their offspring will achieve the heights that Iff they could never reach. However, Clitheroe Buc

caneers gave their parents the chance to reverse that trend and take the sport ing limelight. A total of 50 adults, who

should have really known better, assembled at the new clubhouse. Eight teams made up

the 6-a-side tag rugby spectacle, with each team to have at least one female • player in their side. - The young Buccaneers

clearly enjoyed the compe tition, as they even joined in the play to help out their ailing parents. All credit goes to the

youngsters who organised the event, who are looking * forward to the forthcom ing semi-finals and final of s the competition.

o Mytton Fold’s Frank is named §

as new seniors’ league president • THE Standard Life North West Seniors Golf League held its annual meeting at Wilpshire Golf Club last week. The meeting was well supported by all

member clubs - which this year has been increased to eight with the inclusion of Charnock Richard Golf Club - and guests from sponsors Standard Life. After the meeting a four-ball stableford

competition was played between teams drawn from the member clubs. The winners were Alan Donley (Wilp

shire) and Tom Charnock (Longridge) with 44 points.

Runners-up were Wilpshire president

John Ditchfield and Geoff Holtom (Myt ton Fold) with 43, one point ahead of Maurice McGruer (De Vere) and Alan Evans (Burnley). Barry Spargo (Burnley) and Don Melling (Longridge) completed the plac-

ings a point further adrift. After the competition a presentation

was made by new president Frank Harg reaves of Mytton Fold to the retiring sec retary, Dave Johnston, who was instru mental in setting up the league seven years ago. He was thanked for his hard work and

will be sadly missed. ® More golf on page 63

WHALLEY captain Mark "Whe lan believes this is the year that his side's potential will be realised. With little over a week until the

new Veka Ribblesdale League sea son gets under way, the Station Koad skipper is ready to banish last season to the history books. “We have high hopes like we do

every year,” said Whelan. : “Our aim is to finish above half

way, and with the standard of players we have, there is no reason why we shouldn’t.” The ability is obviously there,

as in their penultimate game of last season, the Ribble Valley side beat league runners-up Great Harwood by 101 runs. Unfortunately, in the second

day of the final double-header weekend, the locals crashed to a nine wicket defeat at the hands of Settle - summing up the side's lack of consistency. But with a new professional joining the books this season in

“He was more a bread and but

and out strike bowler and proven wicket taker, the Whalley cap tain’s only doubt is in the batting stakes. So in his pre-season team talk

he has asked his side to step their game up and take on the batting shortfall. He said: “I’m 44 this year and

we only had half a squad avail able.

“Which is why I need the team

to be more flexible this year and have everyone playing to the best of their ability.” Whalley’s first game of the sea

son is away at Ribblesdale Wan derers on April 17th, followed by another derby date at champions Read a week later. And although Whelan knows

he’s up against it at Read, he knows a win is a possibility at Wanderers. He said: “Ribblesdale away

will be a test for our pro and it will show us what he can do. “I always fancy my chances

against them. “Read are a different story as

they should walk the league again. “But when you play better

sides you have to just raise your game. “And a win against either side

would make us a lot more confi dent for the rest of the season.”

Skipper Neil is aiming to build

by Phil Simpson

CLITHEROE captain Neil Bolton has urged his young stars to stand up and be counted. The new Veka Ribbles

dale Cricket League is just over a week away. And if the Chatburn

Road outfit are to improve on last season’s fine third placed finish, Bolton feels the youngsters have to share the burden. He said: “I ’m looking

forward to it - 1 just hope the weather holds up! “We’ve lost Andy

Burns, who has moved away, and Andrew Ainsworth has joined the police in Blackpool, so his availability will be limited. “But we’ve a few young

lads coming through from the second team, who could be drafted in for the odd game. “We’ve kept pretty

much the same team together, and they all know each other now, so we can build on that. “But the young lads in

the team need to stand up and be counted.” South African all-

rounder Craig Thyssen has replaced Mark Gille spie as paid man, but might have to wait for his Clitheroe bow. The Springbok, 20, who

comes in at number three for Eastern Province, has been called up for a 20-20 tournament in his home land. And Bolton added:

“We’re expecting a decent professional, but we may have to wait a couple of weeks until he arrives. “South Africa have

organised their own 20-20 competition, and the UCB have insisted that players stop over and take part. “He may miss a few

games, but there are other clubs in the same boat. “But I ’ve been talking

to Johann Louw, who was pro at East Lancashire, and he is highly recom mended. “We had a pro last year

who bowled quite well, and he got us a lot of bonus points. “But to be honest, he

blew hot and cold - on his day he was a talented player, but sometimes he

just wasn’t up for it. “Hopefully Craig can be

a bit more consistent, and he is a level two coach so he will be a bit more involved with the rest.” As for their first game of

the campaign at Black burn Northern: “I t ’s not the best place to go, but we’ve a good record there. “But these are the

games we need to win if we are to challenge. “But it looks like we

may be sat around watch ing the rain at this rate!” Clitheroe entertain

Great Harwood in the Ramsbottom Cup on May 8th, and Bolton said: “They’re a top side and we beat them at our place in the league last year. “Usually they are good

games, but we proved last year that on our day we can beat anyone. “The cup should be

interesting, you have to use five bowlers and we have Neil Bibby, Mark Hargreaves and Craig Thyssen now who are all quality.” But he admits Read are

still the team to beat in the league: “Read have strengthened and are still a top quality side. “If I was a betting man,

I wouldn’t put much on anyone else winning the title. “You never know what

can happen, but I think it is between Read, Settle, Great Harwood and our selves. “And if we can grab a

Lancashire Cup spot again, we will have had another good season.”
