From workhouse to business boss

by Faiza Afzaal ATKINSON

David James April 10th.

Happy 18th Birthday. Have a great day.

Lots of love. Dad, Mum, Chris,

Grandma and Grandad.

MANY people have been saddened to hear of the death of Danny Cattermore, who died a t the age of 84 after a short illness. Mr Cattermore was born in 1919 at the

Blackburn workhouse - now Queens Park Hospital. An only child of fairly poor parents, he did

not own a pair of shoes until he was 15! It was while he was still young that he

moved to Clitheroe and lived in the work- house at Clitheroe Community Hospital. He began his working life at Chaigley

Dairies and spent a short time working in the quarry. . In 1942, he saw an opening in selling fire

wood and set up premises close to the milk marketing board, where he chopped wood morning till night for a threepenny bit a bucket. By this time he had met Miss Frances

Redhead, who was bom and bred in Sabden. The couple were married in September

1941 and went on to have seven children: Jean, Terry, Danny, Julia, Peter, Chris and Diana. Peter died in 1956 during infancy. During Mr Cattermore’s first years in

business, he would take his older children to work, where they would sleep on beds made up on the firewood bundles while he chopped wood. In 1950 he set up “Danny’s mobile can

teen” selling cups of tea and coffee at Edis- ford.

Later, he invested in a street cart, selling

hot potatoes. He would set the stall up in Clitheroe town centre, opposite King Lane Cinema, waiting for the customers to leave the cinema and pubs on a Saturday night. In October 1961, he started a saw mill in

Up Brooks. It was there that his older sons, Terry and Danny, began their working lives. Tragically, in 1964, Danny was killed in an

accident. The business however, thrived and in the 1960s, Mr Cattermore bought his first auto

mated wood cutting machine from Churchill and Sims in St Albans - the owner of that company being Winston Churchill. When a new line in fencing was started, several jobs were created for both men and women. Following the death of his wife, Frances,

In 1967 he was left to bring up two babies - Chris and Diana. His older children, who by that time were

married with their own children, helped out when they could. Business success led to an interest in trav

el and he would often take his two young children with him. His love of ships and boats was life-long

and eventually he bought his own boat - “Blue Dawn”. Every weekend his children, grandchil

dren and friends would go to Glasson Dock to enjoy trips out. Mr Cattermore took great pleasure in

children and was always very generous with his gifts to local churches and schools. People will remember him as a great char

acter, full of spontaneous fun, a genuine Lancashire man with a huge heart and car ing nature.' His funeral takes place today.
