member states. Conservatives continue to take the flak for the state of our railways rather than admit to our people that they were following an EU directive. As a matter of interest,
France currently has the most number of cases against it in the European Court of Justice - over 400 a t the last count. These are for non compliance with either regulations or refusal to comply with ECJ judgements. Why are we tolerating this nonsense folks?

friendly local post office, which I visit a t least three times a week. I always use this post office
before using the main one in King Street, which has a 10- minute wait and where the ser vice is not quite as friendly. To have just one post-office
in the town is insane and they would need to make it twice as big - at a great expense. Save Henthorn Road Post
Office.

In association with iy if
for closures THERE is presently much con cern and anger about the clo sure of well-loved local Post Offices in the North West. People are unfortunately
directing their fury in the wrong direction. Their MPs and Government are helpless. In October 1998, under the
framework of the European Joint Committee on Postal Ser
vices, an agreement was signed between member states, which included the UK, to “Mod ernise” and “Liberalise” the postal services within Europe (EU Directive 2002/39/EC). This “Agreement” was sup
posed to be a positive step in developing European mod ernised postal services which “would create employment and flexibility within Europe's Postal services”. However since this agree
ment was signed, countries like Belgium have seen nothing but unrest. In Britain, not only have we seen the disappearance of our second class service, but complaints continue to rocket in relation to an increasingly deteriorating first class postal service. Add to this the closure of a
large proportion of much need ed sub post offices and you have another example of the hidden EU causing havoc and hard ship. Directory inquiries, imple
mented under EU regulations COS/1994/2184-paperl, has given us the expensive and highly inefficient 118 service, all due to the “Liberalisation of
the Telecommunications Mar ket”. The very worst of the hidden
EU is the debacle of our rail way system (EU Directive 91/440), which separated rail from services. So blindly imple mented by the last Conserva tive government, it is totally ignored by all the other EU
monstrous plan NEWSPAPERS traditionally print nonsense on April Fool’s Day and many residents of Slaidburn think that the article of April 1st entitled “Massive backing for new village hall in Slaidburn” falls into this cate gory. The unspoilt character of the
village of Slaidburn is one of the jewels in the Ribble Valley’s crown, which people come from all over the country to see. Whilst the residents are in
favour of retaining the chapel and the chapel house, they do not want to replace the attached Sunday school, which harmonises with the chapel, with a much larger building complete ly out of harmony. It is not the front of the chapel
that visitors see approaching from the east, but the side over looking the village green. One look at the barn-like
structure and large slabs of glass shows that the design would be more appropriate for a super store or a building in a retail park. To write that the Slaidburn
Property Trust has received an impressive 179 letters of support is misleading propaganda. If one letter per household was allowed it is thought that the number would be nearer 30 and the majority are little more than names on a petition as the Prop erty Trust wrote the letters, which people signed. How many of those people
believed when they signed the forms that they were supporting the general concept of a village hall rather than the proposed monstrosity?

The intention to pave and
make a car park on a registered village green, which is also a flood plain, is unacceptable, as is extending the plans over land they do not own.
Promises were made of a joint
meeting of the parish council, Ribbie Valley Borough Council, English Heritage and nearby res idents before the plans were sub mitted, but it never happened. The Property Trust refuses to consider alternative plans, which have been drawn up, which are in keeping with the conservation area. If the people of the Ribble Valley knew the size of the pro posed building there is strong feeling that little backing for the massive new village hall at Slaid burn would reflect informed opinion more accurately. Should this monstrosity look
over the village'green at Slaid- bum?

Decisions will
be less secret IT IS good news that all 25 gov ernments of Europe now seem united in supporting the draft EU constitution. I t is not a perfect document,
but it is a great deal better than the existing treaties. The constitution will end the
secrecy behind which key EU decisions have been made, and will strengthen the role of national parliaments in holding ministers to account and chal lenging proposed EU laws. It will help Europe speak with
a single voice on a world stage otherwise dominated by Presi dent George W. Bush. It will give individual citizens new legal rights. It will make it more diffi cult for countries like France and Spain to block much-needed reforms to the common agricul tural and common fisheries poli cies. Rejecting it wouldn't mean
that the EU goes away, but that we just muddle along the same problems as at present. Liberal Democrats are calling for a refer endum on the issue. Without question we should vote YES.

The museum would not take
it as they do not accept plastic. However a comer of the Plat

we can marry the two parts together - the original box with exploded diagram would of course be a great help. Surely a vacant plinth can be
found outside the local Joke Emporium a t the RVBC Offices - after all disabled sculp tures do seem to be the in-thing if Trafalgar Square is anything to go by.

Thank you for doing
something amazing I AM writing to thank your readers who have donated blood or bone marrow to the National Blood Service (NBS) over the past year for their support and to persuade others to become donors as well. I would also like to thank those people
who support the NBS behind the scenes: the local collection session organisers, companies and volunteers who make valu able contributions to help the NBS fulfil its core purpose of saving and improving lives. I recently presented the NBS’s National
Special Awards. The awards recognise the work of those people who have made “special” contributions to the service, including staff, volunteers, organisa tions, blood donors and recipients. These people really have gone the
extra mile to support the NBS and I had the opportunity to see at first hand that being a blood or bone marrow donor real ly can save and improve patients’ lives. It was a great honour and has inspired
me to help spread the word. By giving blood you really are doing
something amazing - saving lives. During the awards, as well as meeting
blood transfusion recipients, I met some of the wonderful donor carers who
ensure that giving blood is as comfortable as possible, and also the volunteers who help to organise donor sessions across the country. Without these very special people the
NBS wouldn’t be able to operate and a big thank you goes to them as well. The NBS requires 9,000 units of blood
every day to meet demand from hospitals, and the demand never stops. Please become a donor. To find where
your nearest donor session is taking place, call the National Donor Helpline on 0845 7711711 or visit
