Kim defies weather to set up title repeat

By GEORGE EMBLEY national competition for the second G

time. The 26-year-old Clitheroe GC star

defied horrendous conditions and returned an impressive one-over-par 75 to lead after the first qualifying round of the English Women's Championship at Hunstanton GC, Norfolk. The richly talented Curtis Cup star

OLF ace Kim Andrew has served notice of her intentions as she bids to win a major

at the ninth, 14th and 18th holes. Delighted Kim said: "I'm happy with my round - I played well in very diffi

cult conditions. "It's a very nice course, quite tight,

and it's a matter of keeping the ball on

the fairways. "The greens are brilliant, very fast,

but it was very windy and putting was

difficult." Kim travelled down to Norfolk on

Saturday and practised on the course for the next two days before teeing it up

for real on Tuesday. Kim, of course, won the English

made a superb start on Tuesday at the Women's Championship at Saunton

magnificent links course. Although Kim dropped a shot at the

opening hole, a brilliant eagle at the fifth, where she chipped in for a three, and a birdie two on the seventh took her

to two under the card. Despite being buffeted by gale-force

winds and constant heavy rain, Kim was steadiness personified and only dropped three more shots in the round

GC, in Devon, three years ago. And an impressive performance in

this year’s event will certainly stand Kim in good as she prepares for her sec ond Curtis Cup appearance against the Americans at Ganton GC next month. The second qualifying round took

place yesterday and the leading 32 play ers will contest the match-play stages The final takes place on Saturday.

August 19th, with the fixtures due to be released in around a month's

time. A good start for the Blues is

important after the early-season traumas last time around. They won only five of their first

12 league games - putting them up against it in the title race from the

off. A 10-game unbeaten run

thrust them up to second place. But the fact that they had

played more games than eventual winners Vauxhall Motors and run ners-up Newcastle Town eventual ly caught up with them, and a dis mal end to the season saw them fin ish a hugely disappointing 10th. Burgess said on his appointment:

"A good start will make a big differ ence.

"But there is not a lot wrong with

things. "We have a good side and it will

be my first priority to try and hold

onto the squad. "1 don’t want to undo anything
