Bold regional initiative in a bid to market their beef and lamb the move to other products
by Tim Procter
FARMERS in the Rib- ble Valley are joining others all across the region in taking a bold step to market their beef
and lamb. And they are keen to extend
such as grouse. After initial meetings, some
months ago, repor ted in the Advertiser and Times, Bowland F orest Foods L td has been formed to try to increase farm incomes. The basic idea is to add value to
what up to now have been the standard products of Bowland farms, and widen their appeal to
the retail and catering trades. This is being done by forming a
three-sided operation involving up to 200 farmers and five auction marts from across the region. Directors of the company from
these sectors have already been chosen and now agreement is being sought with the processors. The company says: "The benefits
of being a member of this initiative will come from the branding and improved marketing of the output,
from the sharing of information to improve the livestock production and from the costs to be saved by this three-way collaboration." The company is to be officially
launched on Bank Holiday Mon day by the Duke of Westminster, owner of the Abbeystead Estate. The day will also include talks
bv gamekeepers on the conserva tion and estate management work they do. The RSPB and English Nature are also involved.

Kosovan refugee helpers honoured at reception
VOLUNTEERS from the Ribble Valley who helped to look after last year's influx of Kosovan refugees have been honoured. Recognition of their work
at the temporary shelter, set up for the refugees at the former Calderstones Hospi tal in Whalley, led to invites to a gala reception at Coun ty Hall for Mrs Janet Hem ingway, Mrs Pamela Wooff, Mrs Jean Doherty and Mrs Pauline Lamper. All are members of the

Inspectors also said that
March, Ribblesdale Nurs ery School was scrutinised by a team of inspectors and received a glowing report. In its report, the stan
dards squad said that the Queens Road nursery, which was established in 1950, had "many good fea tures and no major areas for improvement". The Clitheroe-based
nursery has 101 children on roll, all attend part time in either the morning or after noon, and, according to the inspectors' report, when the youngsters leave to s ta r t school full-time their attainment is broadly above average and most are on course to exceed nationally expected'Desirable Learn ing Outcomes in all areas of learning. Quality of teaching at
Ribblesdale Nursery is described as good and inspectors said th a t the children are taught well: "The effective teamwork of the staff contributes signifi cantly to the good quality teaching that the children receive."

THE flag of Low Moor Club, Clitheroe, flew at half mast this week in honour of a founder mem ber, Mr Ralph Parkinson, who died on Friday. Mr Parkinson (68) lived moped
in Low Moor all his life and found a love of the land at the farm there. He started his working life on a farm a t West Marton, but was later a driver and had his own Tarmac wagon for some time. Then followed 1G years

the basket. Mr Parkinson's farm knowledge was never wasted. He was often asked for advice, delivered numerous lambs and helped with the haymaking for farmers over a wide area. For many years after

A NURSERY school which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year has been sent to the top of the class by 0F ST ED assessors. For th re e days in
Inspectors also said th a t initial assessment records need more detail to prove a "more effective" starting point to measure pupils' progress. The 0FSTED inspectors'
also said that the children have very good attitudes to learning and that relation ships between children, staff and other adults is "very good". According to the 0FSTED team, there is also good provision for chil dren with special education al needs and those who have English as an additional language. However, the report also
noted tha t more planned opportunities should be provided to help higher attaining children improve their achievements and that in instances where teaching was satisfactory, teachers' questioning was said not to sufficiently challenge chil dren in their learning.
report has been welcomed by Mrs Dewhurst, who says it highlights the excellent work being done by all the staff: "We have a hardwork ing and dedicated team and the report shows that the school is continuing to give all its pupils an excellent start to their school life. We try to bring out the best in each child and encourage them to learn. "I am pleased th a t the
inspectors have recognised how keen and enthusiastic the children are and tha t they have noticed how they enjoy coming to school and behave well towards each other." And the chairman of gov
