New pick-up has Animal instincts

ICK-UPS have never really taken off in the UK. Jet out to some

hotter climes and you will find they are the common man's leisure vehicle, com plete with chunky wheels, roof-mounted spotlights, stripes and bull bars. We could yet also see

such cars commonly in the UK. The lifestyle pick-up sector is, believe it or not, growing at an astounding rate, hence the availability of models like Mitsubishi's L200 4 Life, which it is claimed started this trend at its launch here back in 1998. Those who have really

been bitten by this tough and trendy bug will like the Japanese company's latest Animal Cab 4x4 special edition - essential ly an L200 4 Life 5-seater Double Cab with all the conceivable options, plus a few more. Animal, in case you did not know, is an active wear and equip ment supplier for extreme sport fanatics of mountain biking, surfing, motor- cross, snow-boarding and

A SUN-SATIONAL CAR! P

By JONATHAN CROUCH___________

IN IN FA RINA and Peugeot have produced some mighty stylish cre ations in the past, but arguably

none as stunning as the 306 Cabriolet. It has been slightly revised in recent times, but the looks are as arresting as ever. Which is just as well. After all, if image and rarity are not among

your priorities in buying an affordable cabrio let, they will be pretty high on the agenda. Of course, the other main consideration is likely to be that of affordable practicality. Realisti cally, since you will be spending more time with the top up than down, the ease of opera tion of the hood mechanism and both sound and noise insulation need to be excellent. In this 306 Cabriolet, they are - and the con

wake-boarding. Its brand ing appears all over the bonnet, sides and tailgate.

More significantly, there

are 16in. alloy wheels, a high-mount stop light on the tailgate, a black leather steering wheel, front fog lamps, stainless steel door entry guards, a

silver dashboard panel, a black carpet mat set and black seats with grey cen tre panels featuring blue pin stripes.

It all costs £20,695, including VAT which VAT registered business will be able to reclaim. This would reduce the price by

£3,090. If you want to spend a bit more, there is an optional accessory pack for £896 (including VAT), which includes a chrome front A-guard, a chrome front underguard, twin front driving lamps and chrome rear lamp guards.

vertible operation is simplicity itself. Thanks to the standard electric mechanism, you simply unclip, push the button and sit back to enjoy the spectacle as the metal cover behind you rises to swallow the hood, then falls cleanly on top of it. Under the bonnet lies a 123 b.h.p. 2.0-litre

engine, which feels even quicker than it is. Rest to 60 takes 9.7 seconds on the way to 120 m.p.h. If that is too fast, there is also now the option of 1.8-litre power. Either way, the brilliant han dling that is a part of driving all 306 models has

The Smart car lives up to its name W

By DENNIS MURTAUGH

I IAT is a pure joy to own, sots your pulse racing when you see it

and becomes something you have a passion for once you own one? It is the Smart car, and the

very first U K Smart Owners’ Club rally took place in Welling- don, Germany. There are three models of this

fun-filled car on offer in this coun try at the moment and they are the Pure, Pulse and Passion, Local Smart owners Stephen

Lawrenson, Frances Ilickling, Adrian Ellison .Damian Jones and Andrew Moss set off from

Colne for the journey to Welling-

don. You may be asking what exact

ly a Smart car is. Well, I’m sure that many of you reading this have recently stood and stared at a strange little vehicle bombing along the road and wondered what on earth it was. Let me introduce you to the lat

est of the economy vehicles which has hit the roads of Britain . The tiny, Mercedes-engineered

Smart Car is certainly an eye- catcher and has some wonderful features, including high fuel econ omy, lower insurance and only qualification for the £100 road tax.

From my own personal experi

ence (my wife owns one), I know how much people are attracted to Smart cars and love to stop you and talk about them. Andrew Moss, proprietor of

Colne Car Centre in Burnley Road, Colne, is the man responsi ble for bringing to the area the Smart car, which is fast achieving cult status. The Smart car is a two-seater,

left-hand drive vehicle with plen ty of room in the back for shop ping. It is also an unbelievable performer, with a list of standard features and options which would do credit to a top-of-the-range car. The 599cc engine allows you to

travel in comfort at 70 m.p.h. on the motorway and, in the right

been retained intact. You just ache to drive it, whether or not the sun decides to make an appearance.

Driving satisfaction will be high on the list of

priorities for those who choose the optional Pin- infarina-styled hard top. This is lined to reduce noise intrusion, has a heated glass rear window and is finished in the same body colour as the car.

It can be removed easily for simple storage,

transforming your 306 back from coupe to cabriolet at a stroke. And the price? Well, put aside an extra £1,370. All cabriolets have twin airbags, power steering, electric windows, elec trically-operated and heated door mirrors, ABS, alloy wheels and remote control central locking. This is a good specification on a car that, though a little more expensive than the opposi tion, also has that elusive element of class.

Ultimately, that is what sets this little Peu

geot aside from many of the other hatchback- derived cabriolets you can buy. Which is why, had I the requisite minimum (some £19,820 on the road for the 2.0-litre or just £17,420 for the

new 1.8), I would not hesitate to buy one. FACTS AT A GLANCE

m.p.g. Yes the Smart car is selling like

hot cakes and it is no wonder with everything it offers. You do get the supposedly

amusing comments about the size of the car. But I know who has the last laugh at the petrol pump or when trying to find a place to park Incidentally, if you are wonder

ing about the left hand drive, this becomes like second nature after about three or four days’ driving. I personally think this is a won

derful small car. It puts the fun back into driving, and if you like to be noticed, I can guarantee you will be. Prices start at £5,995.
