destroyed A PIECE of Clitheroe’s history was shattered when vandals smashed an ancient window in a town centre public house.

The ornately-engraved

window, believed to date back 150 years, at the White Horse Inn, York Street, was destroyed on Thursday evening.

Landlord Mr Lawrence

Adams said the window was smashed by someone outside the building at

around 9-55 p.m. Mr Adams said: ‘‘I hope

that letting people know about what has happened will deter others from

doing the same. It is not known what

was used to smash the 8ft by Oft window. However, it will cost an estimated £1,500 to replace.

Glaziers have now putrin

a temporary window while Mr Adams finds someone

who can make him replacement.

Locals help kit out South Pacific Utd!

A SOUTH Pacific island football team will now be able to walk on to the pitch in its own strip, thanks to the generosity of Ribble Valley residents.

Football-mad children on the island of Honiara are

due to get a whole new look following an appeal for old kits in the Clitheroe Advertiser anil Times.

The appeal was the brainchild of Stonyhurst woman

Mrs Jan Alcock who wanted to help out a friend work ing as a teacher in the Soloman Islands.

Brother John McAlister, a former colleague from St

Mary’s Sixth Form College, Blackburn, went out to the island last year.

He told Mrs Alcock, of Hodder Court, about the

shortage and she launched the appeal which has received a great response.

Among the kits handed in is a full team strip from

St Mary’s Hall, Stonyhurst. It is emerald green and navy in colour and this looks set to be the Honiaran team’s official strip this season.

Mrs Alcock said: “ I am delighted that people have given these kits. They will certainly be appreciated

y the children.” Several other kits have been given to Mrs Alcock

and these will all be boxed up and shipped out to the island in September. The kits will be used by school

pupils aged between 11 and ML However, more arc still needed, so anyone wanting

to send a kit to the island can contact Mrs Alcock on 01254 820490.

smells. Bad smells lead to com

plaints from countryside residents and tourists, says Mr Jolyon Dodgson, regional secretary of the Country Landowners’ Association in Lancashire and Cumbria. A t this time o f the

year, the North West is inundated with tourists, most o f them from the towns and cities, and they have p re t ty sensitive noses when it comes to strong smells from the land,” he comments. Around half the com

plaints about odours from farms are concerned with field spreading of slurry and manure, with other complaints about odours

from livestock buildings or manure stores.

He said that farmers

had to accept that environ mental issues continue to attract a high public pro file and need to demon s tra te environmental awareness. The association has

advised farmers to clean up their act when spread ing slurry and manure, by using weather forecasts and avoiding spreading in

certain fields, as well as on bank holidays and at weekends or evenings, unless special equipment is used. Mr Dodgson said: “High

standards of hygiene and cleanliness are emphasised

to minimise smells from l iv e s to c k b u i ld in g s ,

manure and slurry stores and specific measures are set out for cattle buildings, pig buildings and poultry houses, all of which can become very smelly in the hot summer weather i f care is not taken.”

The Ministry has pub

lished three codes of good agricultural practice for the protection of water and soil as well as air, which Mr Dodgson says are essential reading for farmers and landowners, particularly at a time when the countryside has its h igh e st inf lux o f v i s i t o r s . ______________
