In order to obtain the place, along with the
intense programme of 10 to 12 hours’ training a week, Marisa had to pass two auditions. The routine included movements in ballet and modern/jazz. She was required to sing
and perform a monologue. The f irs t was to gain entrance to the dance stu dio, once attended by Dianne Yudale, who took the role of Jet in IT V ’s Gladiators, and the other was in the presence of offi cials of Lancashire County

Mark shows degree of
initiative
A C L IT H E R O E stu dent who opted for a
degree course at his local college because of Government cutbacks in grants is celebrat
ing a first-class result. Mark Bleasdale (21), of
Montague Street, studied at Accrington and Rossen- dale College, and went to the top of the class — by gaining a first-class
B.Sc. honours degree in con temporary technology (engineering). The degree has been
validated by Sheffield University and he is now due to attend a graduation ceremony at the university on September 12th. Mark, who obtained a
BTEC national diploma in elelronics al (he college at the age of 18, chose to stay there after the Govern ment cut its grants for higher education students living away from home. He is one of four stu
dents at the college to gain first-class honours degrees and one of a total of 33 students to gain degrees validated by either Shef field or Liverpool John Moores University. The scheme is now four
years old and the college, too, is celebrating, after
achieving a 100% pass rate with all graduates gaining a f irs t or second-class
degree. Mark said: “Three years ago it was obvious that, the
Government was going to continue cutting grants and that students would find it increasingly difficult to finance life away from home. “ I am glad I stayed at
college while livin g at home with my parents, and I am really pleased with my results.” Mark, who is a former
pupil o f St Michael and John’s RC Primary School, Clitheroe, and St Augus tine’s RC High School, Biliington, is the son of Castle Cement analyst Mr Peter Bleasdale, and his wife, Joan, who is a wel fa r e a s s is ta n t at St Michael and St John’s. Mark’s degree course
included computer pro gramming, electronics and mechanical and electrical engineering, and he is now hoping his f irs t-c las s degree will help him in his search for a job. Higher education co-or
dinator Mr Dave Tyas said: “We are delighted with the results. They are a tribute to the college, the dedication of the staff and the hard work of the students.”
• Applications are still
being accepted for courses starting this September in engineering, health stu dies, media studies, social studies and cultural stu dies, as well as HND courses in business studies and hotel management.
