Big shake-up for police area L ocal division is to join with Blackburn

u Par^ of a wider plan by the county’s Chief Con
stable, Pauline Clare, to take the force into the next century.
But it is still too early to say what will happen to
the controversial tele phone system, which has been the target of much
public criticism in recent years. From April 1st all calls
to Clitheroe Police Station and 999 emergency calls are expected to be dealt with at a communications centre in the new division. The communications for
the current division — consisting of Colne, Nel son, Barnoldswick and Clitheroe — are* centra lised at Colne and this sys
tem has come in for some flack. Officers are deployed by
radio from Colne when emergency calls come
through to the switch board. The switch to this centralised system led to confusion about the cor rect number to dial and complaints about difficulty getting through. Insp. Les Martin con

new set-up would be announced nearer April. He said: “We will still be committed to answering emergency calls within 10 seconds and responding within 15 minutes any where in the county.” The shake-up means
Clitheroe no longer shar ing police resources with the three other towns in the current division. All resources — such as traffic police and CID — will be deployed from a location, y e t to be announced, within the new division. Insp. Martin believes
the public will not see any changes in the policing when Clitheroe merges wth Accrington and Black burn. He said: “We have got good support at the moment, but with the change in divisional struc ture we should have even b e tte r support. There won’ t be a noticeable change in policing.” And he dismissed any
suggestion that the Ribble Valley will be second in line when it comes to deployment of resources. He said: ‘There will be a greater pool of resources. We will be able to use the resources o f Blackburn and Accrington.” In the long run the
changes will lead to an increased number of bob

bies on the beat. Insp. Martin said: “ It has always been a priority to have high visibility policing and the number o f police officers will hopefully increase. We will have police officers doing what they should be doing.” He added that the
changes would certainly not mean the closure of Clitheroe Police Station. An increase in the num- Blackpool
ber of bobbies on the Kib ble Valley beat is due to take place in the next few weeks. Public inquiry assistants will take up their posts at the station’s front counter, releasing more officers for the beat. The county-wide shake-
up will see six new divi sions created from the
existing 14. Using a busi ness-like approach, senior
police officers want to reduce bureaucracy and g iv e b e tte r value for money.
