Careers Service — that’s t e e n a g e r M a r i a n n a Dewhurst.
While almost two-thirds o f last y e a r ’ s school-
leavers in the Ribblc Val ley chose to go on to sixth form or college, Marianna (17) wanted to launch her self directly into a career. After leaving St Augus
tine’s RC High School, Billington, Marianna, of Hillside Farm, Sabden, chose not to follow in the footsteps of her farming family, but looked for a job in the business world. Her school’s careers
adviser, Janet Fowler, encourgcd her to register with Clithcroe Careers Office. The nine offices of East
Lancashire Careers Ser vices maintain a network of current job vacancies suitable for school or col lege-leavers. It was not long before Marianna was sent for an interview at Clithcroe conservatory systems manufacturers, Ultraframe — and she got the job. Marianna now enjoys

tations, visits, window-fit t in g and a f t e r - s a le s
sendee. Ultraframe has also
given her the chance to develop her skills by attending Burnley College on day release to gain the NVQ Level 2 in business administration. Marianna said: “ I feel
like I ’ve got the best of both worlds — I’m work ing and earning a good wage, while still devel oping my career training through day-release.” Frances Prince, of the
careers sendees, said: “We arc delighted when we see s a t is f ie d c l ien ts l ik e Marianna. The type of vacancies we prefer to offer are those that give
training, because young people stand a b e tte r chance of developing their careers with additional qualifications and skills beyond school. “We’re looking forward
to helping a whole host of school-leavers this year, too.” Clithcroe Careers Office
is at 5 Swan Courtyard, off Castle Street, and staff can be contacted there on 444799.
