ORIGINAL FRENCH ONION SOUP

KKAIM.Lhof this column am. in Ihr a very sjuflal tmat. I hail a lot ofiaiol-

ink to cl* to get this week's Dish of the Week ■•-•el|ie from local restaurateur Ian Hro-vn. of Brown s Bistro.

This family-run business is now in its

eighth your and while David anti his 5on, Ian. conjure up amazing main courses. Davids wife. Carole, in the kitchen, creates delicious desserts and

dressings for the salad served as an appetiser when you arrive. David’s French onion soup recipe is

normally a closely-guarded secret. He first tasted the original version in a lit

tle restaurant which he pissed on his way to work ju

fish and vegetable market nearby and David would join them on cold frosty mornings, often burning his mouth on the hot soup ;is it came straight from a very large grill, dripping with melted cheese. David was in Paris on an exchange working trip anil the soup was both filling and cheap. David and Carole returned to Paris a

couple of years ago and made a senti mental visit to the Hotel Castiglione.

which they found to be still bejiutiful anil still very expensive. So dream of Paris while eating your real French onion soup.

produce a wine that is super fresh and pale green in colour, with an aromatic bouquet and a crisp, fresh fruit flavour. This wine is best enjoyed young, served chilled, either as

an aj>oritif, or ;is an accompaniment to white meat and fish. It is the perfect summer wine — if you can find the perfect summer, that is!

WHEN SirArthur Conan Doyle wrote hi* finest Sherlock Holmes story, he caild hardy have imagined that his fie- timal detelive would one day come to lib to roan the moors in search of the haind fron hell. Fact is often stranger than fiction.

Tie deestalker-elad detective will actually ie strolling through Wycoller Country Park, Colne, later this‘month in the flidsommer Actors* production of “The lound of the Baskervilles.” I caujht up with Mr Holmes and the

rest of-he company’s cast when they vnited -.ever Park, Rivington, to j>er- form heir open a ir walkabout producion. It ws such a simple idea. Instead of

spendig money on an expensive set, use tie one created by nuture. far more uthentic anil very atmospheric. Cumins went up, metaphorically of cours, once the audience was gath

ered ogether for the first scene in a cordned-off corner o! the car park.

‘The Hound of the Baskervilles” Midsommer Actors

Not your immediate image of cold and bleak Dartmoor, but the opening 20 minutes set the scene for a humorous

and imagin;itive interpretation of Sir Arthur’s story. A sharp blow on a whistle by one of

the east marked the end of each scene and time for audience participation.

This involved walking to the next nail- biting instalment to try to solve the mystery of Sir Charles Baskerville’s death. A ruined castle was cleverly used sis the backdrop for Baskerville Hall and

the moorland was perfect for the hound's stomping ground. No doubt the company will make full use of the countryside in Colne. Throughout the play, one thing shone through — the energy of the

cast. They did not stop for breath in their quest to re-create the story of the world’s greatest detective. They stuck faithfully to the plot, though iney did add their own light-hearted touches to

the three-hour production. Enjoying the production depended

very much on the weather and, fortun ately, on this occasion it remained dry. It was by no means a short play and standing around can take its toll on your feet, so a pair o f sturdy shoes is needed. It is billed ;is a family event, but some of the scenes are a bit too long for young children.

"The Hound of the Baskervilles" will

be performed at Wycoller Country Park, Colne, from August 2Kth to Sep tember 1st, For further information telephone 010U1 (>55002.
