N EW LY restored from the ravages of time and vandalism, a painting of a crucial stage in the devel opment of Whalley has gone on exhibition in the village’s library gallery.
The painting, showing
monks in the early stages o f building the abbey between 18550 and 1 14l>, was painted for English Martyrs’ Parish, Whalley, in 1975 by the local artist, Mr Lambert Halstead, who lived on The Sands.

the abbey building, which is the disused parish hall. Vandals who broke into th e em p ty b u i ld in g damaged the painting badly.
Now re sto red and
cleaned, its exhibition comes halfway through the celebration of 1,400 years of Christianity in Whalley, just as the abbey itself only a r r iv ed halfway through the long history of the church in the area.
The next event on Sep
tember 8th is a poetry reading by Ursula Fanth- orpe, whose latest volume of verse, “ Safe as Houses”, has just received
enthusiastic reviews. A talk on September 8th is
entitled “ Crowing Old Faithfully” and, appealing to the other end of the age range. November 1st sees the “ Young People’s Light Party” .
A festival organiser
says the autumn pro gramme introduces a series of spiritual and con templative occasions and gives practical guidance on meditation and prayer.
Our photograph shows
branch librarian Miss .lean Harrison with Mr Hal stead’s painting, which is in her charge until the end of the month when it goes to the p r e sb y te ry at English Martyrs’ . One mystery remaining is the
author of the verse painted on it in illuminated gothic script.
It reads: “ Like mountains carv’d by human skill appear,
Where Towers, Pillars, Pinnacles and Spires
To all concur to match my great desires,
Whose joy it is to see such structures rais’d
To th’end my God and Father should be praised.” (CAT 1489)

at seven o’clock on Saturday morning and the overnight stop will be at Knaresborough. By then they will have completed 80 miles, including the gruelling climb from Bolton Abbey to Blubberhouscs Moor. Each rider pays for all the expenses he incurs in the course of
the journey. In attendance will be three sup port vehicles, one of them pro

will be at 3M Neotechnic, where the ridel's will have breakfast with the Mayor of the Ribble Valley, Coun. Eileen Lowe, and Mr Tom linson’ s widow, Mrs Maura Tomlinson. There will be a street collection in Clitheroe on Saturday morning.
