I do this especially if I am doing an abstract. I find before I start to apply paint this also loosens me up. I usually indicate the horizon and take care to place the centre of interest at one of the most important intersections when dividing a painting into thirds. During the pandemic I was reusing older canvases I didn’t like any longer, but I always left something of the original in the new painting.
