Expanding to lead the way in medical implantable and healthcare solutions

Based on expertise built over more than 40 years and a proven track record of exceptional reliability, the components produced by Micro Crystal are satisfying the most demanding medical applications, particularly with components like the first real-time clock module with extremely low timekeeping current consumption and helium-impervious, full ceramic package.

Clock (RTC) Module, Micro Crystal expands its product line dedicated to Medical Implantable Grade frequency and timing solutions by adding a product that offers unique functionality and power saving opportunities.

W

The medical implantable grade product line includes low frequency (32.0–102.4 kHz) tuning fork crystals, AT-cut crystals (14–50 MHz), low frequency oscillators (32.768–100 kHz), and now also a high performance RTC Module. Micro Crystal provides extremely accurate, ultra- low power, miniaturised – and most importantly – highly reliable quartz technology for medical implantable and healthcare applications.

Solving size and low power design issues The RV-5028-C7 Medical addresses footprint constraints affecting many medical implantable designs by combining a 32.768 kHz crystal and a RTC integrated circuit within a full ceramic, miniature package measuring 3.2 x 1.5 mm. The low-profile of just 1mm facilitates also extremely compact design. The RV-5028-C7 Medical offers plug & play with integrated I2 communication bus.

C-400kHz

Due to its modular design, it does not require any oscillator optimisation during the design phase and it minimises integration constraints, thus lowering development-validation cost and cutting time to market. The factory calibration process ensures ±1ppm time accuracy (equivalent to ±0.5min/year at ambient)

and the hermetic, full ceramic package is impervious to helium and ensures stability and highest reliability over the lifetime of the implanted device. The RTC’s extremely low power consumption of only 45 nA enables optimised system power management. The device’s MCU can be put into low power mode during periods of inactivity and woken up again autonomously by the RTC, thus extending the battery life. If main power is lost, the automatic power-fail- detect and switch circuitry will connect the battery backup. The backup source for timekeeping can be a simple MLCC- capacitor and solves the design engineer’s toughest backup power challenges.

Extra functions and highest reliability

An alarm function, set to the minute, and a 12-bit timer offer periodic, programmable interrupts. The special event input feature registers external events, including saved time-stamp and interrupt issued. A 32-bit UNIX timer with one-second resolution keeps UNIX time or can be used for time-of- use tracking of a specific function inside the medical device. In addition to all the timing registers, the RTC includes 43 bytes of non- volatile user memory and two bytes of user

ith the introduction of the new ultra-low power and compact RV-5028-C7 Medical Real-Time

RAM. Those bytes offer possibility to store encryption keys and other critical data. The programmable password feature for write protection of the time and the configuration settings of the RTC Module, increases the reliability and integrity of safety-critical applications. The RV-5028-C7 Medical Real-Time Clock Module is manufactured specifically for use in implantable medical devices. As with all of its medical implantable components, Micro Crystal maintains full component traceability records.

A wide range of applications Due to the long-term reliability and best-in-class performance, timing devices from Micro Crystal are taking part of the growth and development of new Class III Active Implantable Medical Devices (AIMD) and Electronic Enabled Drug Delivery devices (EEDDs). The implantable grade RV-5028-C7 Medical is typically used in the design of neuro-stimulators, cardiac monitoring devices, infusion pumps, or smart orthopaedic implants.

Of course, Micro Crystal components are also used in non-implantable devices and they are used in numerous healthcare products such as glucose meters/CGMs, insulin pumps, fitness trackers and where accuracy, ultra-low power consumption and size are at a premium. The Micro Crystal team is able to assist companies with ongoing design, while providing technical proficiency, commercial expertise, and a dependable supply of Quartz Crystals, Oscillators and Real-Time Clock Modules. ●
