M
edical device technology is one of the fastest-growing manufacturing sectors, which has led to a number of medical innovations in healthcare. With the capability to improve patient outcomes and healthcare processes, the medical device industry is only expected to grow, with an expected global revenue of $595bn in 2024. In our cover story on page 72, Andrea Valentino investigates the development of one such trend in the industry as he examines the growing use of wearable devices, their increasing popularity and the potential for the future of medical devices.
3D printing is a well-established manufacturing technique for medical devices as it offers companies a number of benefits when designing new devices. Abi Millar finds out how research teams are using 3D printing to bring innovation and improvements to medical devices on page 56. When developing implant materials, implant surface is a key area for researchers to improve osseointegration and reduce implant failure. As we hear from experts, Monika Karpinski finds out the latest developments in implant materials for improved osseointegration on page 107.
Medical devices and implants can often lead to infection, further treatment and possibly additional surgery to replace implants. In an effort to help prevent infection, a collaboration between Colorado State University and St Andrews has developed a flexible antimicrobial coating to help fight bacteria and reduce infection. We find out more on page 110.
As we delve into the newest research and development in the industry, I hope you enjoy the latest edition of Medical Device Development.
