Changing salt for the better by going beyond it

By going beyond standard formulations for gourmet salts, NuTek Natural Ingredients has created a new brand of salts that maintain high quality, reduce sodium levels, and increase potassium intake, improving health without changing palates.

F

ood without salt leaves food without flavour. That is a broad generalisation but imagine food without salt. Salt serves many more functions than just enhancing flavour, and it is an ingredient in nearly all foods we eat. Our bodies need salt to survive, but we have taken our love of salt to an unhealthy level. Statistics show that the use of salt in our foods is at a harmful level, often overconsumed in foods that are processed and packaged. As studies have revealed scientific evidence that sodium overconsumption is unhealthy, NuTek Natural Ingredients has made it a mission to improve the problem of sodium overconsumption with an alternative salt that reduces the harmful effects of sodium. Today, we have so many choices of different salts to purchase in the grocery

store and for premium dollar, and food manufacturers have the same options at their disposal. Common table salt is one of the least expensive ingredients in food preparation and manufacturing, but our options have grown, and so has the demand for trendier, clean-label salts. In fact, 80% of consumers are looking for clean-label ingredients, and 90% of consumers know that sodium overconsumption is a problem. Artificial flavour enhancers are being replaced by natural salt products, but one salt product has recently risen to the top as the low- sodium solution to healthier salt choices. Potassium salt is a clean-label ingredient that is preferred by 82% of consumers as an alternative solution to the problem of sodium overconsumption. Potassium salt is now widely used as a way to balance the

overconsumption by increasing potassium – an under-consumed nutrient. In fact, the Dietary Guidelines for Americans lists potassium as a nutrient of public health concern because of low consumption rates. Typical diets are high in sodium and low in potassium. Sodium and potassium are interconnected but have the opposite effects; high sodium increases blood pressure, and an increase in potassium decreases blood pressure. The easiest way to lower sodium and raise potassium is through an alternative salt that can be used in every food. In a consumer survey, only 34% of survey participants knew that potassium salt can replace sodium salt. By replacing some of the salt with potassium salt, the results provide a reduction of sodium and an increase of potassium. Increasing potassium in active, healthy consumers can help support optimal fluid balance, improve bone and muscle growth, and lower high blood pressure to prevent heart disease and strokes. A diet with more potassium and less sodium can improve overall cardiovascular health by relaxing blood vessels that lowers blood pressure. The challenge that NuTek Natural Ingredients has solved is giving people what they want and what they need. Gourmet salts like Himalayan salt, sea salt and kosher salt top the list for what consumers want, and they are willing to pay more for products with gourmet salts on the label. To make those salts healthier, NuTek Natural Ingredients planned to ‘Go Beyond’ by combining salt with potassium salt to create a single, lower-sodium crystal. Using its unique way of washing and drying mineral and sea salts with potassium salt, it has created the Beyond Salt brand of products.
