Relieving prostate issues in ageing men

Through its decades-long leadership of the saw palmetto extract sector, Euromed has proved it can help alleviate prostate problems in ageing men with its highly effective Prosterol product.

n important concern for ageing men is prostate health. Euromed’s saw palmetto extract provides relief to this ageing condition, and has led the sector for many decades. Safety and efficacy tests started in the mid-1980s, culminating with the development of Prosterol. In Europe, saw palmetto extract has been prescribed for decades as a first-line treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and is approved as a drug for lower urinary tract symptoms in men with mild-to- moderate BPH. It is also used as a dietary supplement in the US and other countries. To supply growing market demand, Euromed built a dedicated facility in Florida, in the heart of the Everglades, in 2005 to process and dry saw palmetto berries close to where they are collected and to have complete traceability and better control during the crop harvest. The harvesting process as well as the drying process of the berries close to their collection point supports sustainable practices, ensures optimal fatty acid content and provides complete traceability of the raw material, avoiding any risk of product adulteration.

A

Certified and quality controlled Euromed is GMP-certified by the Spanish Medicine Agency as a manufacturer of APIs and for the harvest and processing of saw palmetto berries. The extraction process of Prosterol provides a typical profile of fatty acids, sterols and fatty alcohols. The fruit is concentrated tenfold, yielding an oil extract that provides 85–95% total fatty acids by GC analysis. The content of nine fatty acids is tested in relation to lauric acid, a fatty acid present in unusually high levels in saw palmetto, to verify product authenticity. For each batch produced, a minimum of 20 parameters are by Euromed’s quality control department.

Saw palmetto is a type of palm tree native to the south-eastern US.

One of saw palmetto’s biological mechanisms of action is the inhibition of the 5-reductase enzyme present in high concentrations in the prostate converting testosterone to dihydrotestosterone. Euromed’s saw palmetto extracts have been tested and demonstrate high inhibitory activity at a low concentration, compared with a pharmaceutical reference substance through in vitro models.

Three decades of development Prosterol’s proprietary saw palmetto extract is the culmination of 30 years of development and its safety and efficacy has also been investigated in clinical studies involving thousands of patients. Short, medium and long-term studies showed statistically significant improvement in total international prostate symptom scores (IPSS) during six, 12 or 24 months of follow up.

For example, a 12-week randomised, double blind, placebo-controlled trial

published in 2020 showed a significant decrease in subjective symptoms related to urination compared with placebo, indicating improvement in the main symptoms of BPH. Fifteen years of study results suggest that taking the extract continuously at a daily dose of 320mg is an effective and safe way to prevent the progression of BPH confirmed by the absence of an increase in the severity of subjective symptoms on the IPSS and QoL scales, and in the absence of objective disease progression as prostate growth, reduced urination rate and increased residual urine volume. Since 2017, Euromed’s waste production from saw palmetto extraction has been upcycled to develop natural-based dyes for the textile industry (EarthColors by Archroma). This sustainable, environmentally friendly process is fully traceable from nature to fashion through smart tags. ●
