ver the past year, we have finally seen movement towards recovery after the years affected by the pandemic. However, even as the industry experienced a period of steady travel and growth in 2022, there were signs of slowdown in the final months of the year due to economic concerns. The new year offers untapped potential for the hotelier and hopeful travellers alike as we look to move further away from the shadow of the pandemic.
Hope for the future O
Of course, the year ahead is not without complications. Labour shortages are still a major concern across all travel segments, and there are worries for consumers’ financial concerns and increasing climate anxieties. For a successful 2023, hospitality leaders will need to consider the current climate, and continue to adapt to new and ongoing challenges. We kicked off 2023 in beautiful Lisbon where EHMA held its 49th annual general meeting, ‘Inspiring the Future’. Bringing together industry leaders from across Europe to discuss the future generation of young professionals, EHMA president Panos Almyrantis outlines how to keep them inspired on page 11.
As the world and industry alike continue to face ongoing environmental concerns, we hear how spas are no exception. Speaking to representatives from Sustainable Wellness and Arctic Bath hotel on page 47, they explain why sustainability is a key issue that is not going away and how there is still much to do in this area. And finally, with many guests calling for authentic food experiences when they venture abroad, we learn how hotel restaurants are stepping up to meet the growing demand for local culture and authenticity on page 36. While the industry still has far to go in terms of recovery, the road ahead is looking clearer.
