Anniversary: Women in Timber

1873 – 2023

WOMEN IN TIMBER

When TTJ launched in 1873 it’s a fair bet that there were few, if any, women involved in the industry. However, 150 years on, that’s all changed

Geneviève Standaert Export manager, Vandecasteele Houtimport

With the help of my colleague Dave, I have had more time to work on other topics in the business and invest in the sustainability of our company.

Our industry has gone through a tremendous change. Not only the implementation of the EUTR, we also had Brexit, with the UKTR and now the EUDR is coming round the corner. Fortunately, the timber industry has already had major ‘training’ to get in line with the EUTR. So for our industry, the biggest challenge is going to be to incorporate the geolocation into our IT system. Since 2001 I have also been the inspirator and driving force in our company for the environmental Charter, the durability Charter, the SDG Pioneer and the SDG Champion. This has been the red line through my

career, making the business stronger and more resilient by constantly improving the processes.

Now all businesses in Europe have a new challenge, the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) and the corporate sustainability reporting directive (CSRD). This will keep me busy for another couple of years. Never a dull moment in our trade! ■

Camilla Fish Commercial manager, SCA Products (UK) Ltd

I joined SCA Products (UK) Ltd in January 2022 as the commercial manager, with a development plan to take over as managing director early 2024. It’s an incredible opportunity, which I am very grateful for and as well as enjoying my time thus far, I am excited to continue the journey and to tackle new challenges. My role will be to ultimately lead the company, working alongside colleagues to continue delivering high quality Swedish timber to the UK market. Having previously worked in the concrete industry, I was excited to move into timber and work with such a climate positive material. Being part of an industry that works towards creating a more sustainable society is hugely rewarding, and with SCA in particular as the largest private forest owner in Europe, there is an even greater scale on which a positive impact can be affected. I have found the industry to be hugely welcoming; there are many passionate, knowledgeable professionals and a culture of collaboration lends itself to an exciting, supportive working environment. I look forward to helping to contribute towards promoting timber as a core product in a more diverse material landscape. ■
