Arbor Forest Products has invested £4m to install a new state-of-the-art sawmill planing line at its site in New Holland, North Lincolnshire.
The new line features cutting-edge equipment that is the first of its kind in
the UK. This, said Arbor, will allow it to further automate its production processes, stay ahead of market demand and pass on efficiency savings to its customers. The new system was developed in conjunction with System Hall AB. Replacing a 12-year-old system, Arbor and System Hall worked closely to define the best-possible solution, delivering a sawmill line that comprises a Weinig H4200 moulding machine and a unique range of in-line cutting options, as well as a 5.4m long chop saw (both the first of their kind in the UK).
With a new configuration, Arbor has been able to remove an entire step from its production processes, increasing efficiencies and making a more cost- effective final product. The sawmill’s unique timber scanning technology will help to reduce defects, reduce waste and save time, says the company, and online monitoring, data collection and the ability

HB Fuller Company, the largest pure play adhesives company in the world, has acquired UK-based Beardow Adams. Family-owned Beardow Adams has grown since its establishment in 1976 into a multi-national industrial adhesive manufacturer, with customers in more than 70 countries.
With manufacturing capabilities across Europe and the US, and a powerful distribution network across the globe, Beardow Adams is recognised for its
exciting move toward HB Fuller’s goal of strengthening our leadership position in the markets and regions we serve by expanding our customer base and technology portfolio to address today’s megatrends, such as e-commerce, food safety, and sustainability,” said Jim East, executive vice-president, hygiene, health, and consumable adhesives. “As we combine our businesses, we will be a stronger force in the adhesives industry.” Beardow Adams generated approximately €130m in revenue for the 2022 fiscal year. With a team of 200 employees globally, the company will operate within HB Fuller’s existing Hygiene, Health, and Consumable Adhesives global business unit.
□ Premier Forest Products has invested over £1m in equipment across the business, including its Duchy Timber and Merlwood Timber branches. The state-of-the-art, market leading machinery, which was installed earlier this year, has already doubled the production capacity at the company’s sites in Cornwall and Pembrokeshire.

to check moisture levels have also been incorporated, allowing Arbor to further optimise its processes, target maintenance more efficiently and ensure continuous improvement.
In total, the new sawmill system can custom-cut and process 200m of timber per minute.
“Our strategy is to stay at the forefront of the industry and guarantee the best quality for our customers – that’s why we’ve invested over £15m in automation (such as the sawmill) over the last couple of years,” said Phil Yell, Arbor’s operations director. “That’s why System Hall were so exciting to collaborate with,” continued Mr Yell. “This is the second major investment with them in three years, and they continually push us to think differently and aim high with new equipment. The result is one of the most advanced sawmills in the UK, helping us to exceed customer expectations.”
Baumann builds for a long future
Construction work on Baumann’s new Innovation and Reliability Centre has entered the final build stage at the company’s HQ in Cavaion, Italy. The expansion project is the largest ever undertaken in the 53-year history of the sideloader business and the work already completed includes the excavation of 1,200 lorry loads of earth, removing and buttressing much of a steep escarpment, to add over 3,000m2
of automated storage,
around half of which will be underground. A new rolling road, testing centre, energy supply upgrade and sandblasting area are also being added. A restructuring of the pre-assembly process is already under way, with full completion expected later in the year.
“This project is incredibly important to our future,” said Klaus Pirpamer, managing director. “We needed to make significant changes to meet the challenges of the next 50 years, where electric machines in particular will dominate. That will also have an impact on our own power needs. We can also add efficiency to our storage operations as well as provide further space for our product innovation team.” See also features on pages 81-83 and 86-87.
