Switching Gears for Success
WOMEN’S LACROSSE PERSEVERED TO THE VERY END By Jodie Valade
Graduate student Kyleigh Masteran ’21 remembers the first time she faced Lindenwood University. Te Queens women’s lacrosse midfielder was a freshman and wasn’t sure what to expect when she was put into the game early in the 2018 season. “Tey were all six feet tall, and really athletic, impressive
lacrosse players,” remembered Masteran, who is five feet five inches tall. “It was terrifying my first time playing them.” Te next time Masteran faced Lindenwood was in
May 2021, when Queens’ women’s lacrosse team was in the Division II national championship game. At first, Masteran couldn’t shake the memory of how intimidating Lindenwood initially was.
Queens’ women’s lacrosse team celebrated an outstanding season despite many challenges.

“But then I was like, ‘Wait a minute. We both made it to the national championship game. We’re both playing the same game,’” Masteran recalled. “And that means that we’re just as good, and we can definitely make it a memorable game.” According to Coach Clare Short, it was memorable simply to make it to the finals, Queens’ first such appearance in a championship. “Even getting to the finals after the trying season was an accomplishment,” she said. Te Royals had to overcome a COVID-shortened season, multiple quarantines and Short’s own maternity leave with a brand- new assistant coach in charge at the start of the season. “It was just a lot to balance and a lot of emotions, too,”
Short said.
