1947 Doris Turner Tomas is still living at Westminster Woods on Julington Creek in Jacksonville, Florida. She is still in independent living, but gets a lot of help from son, Drew, and his wife, Pam, who retired and moved from Raleigh. She keeps up with Donnie Rhodes Yandle through Donnie’s daughter-in-law in Wilmington, North Carolina.
1956
Te class expresses sympathy to Mitzi Plonk Folk on the death of her brother, Te Reverend William M. Plonk, Sr. on April 10.
Te class expresses sympathy to Mary Ann Dover Lyon on the death of her husband, Dan Lyon, Jr., on August 17. Dan was also the father of Allison Lyon Cobb ’84.
1957 Peggy Whittle Vaughan, Mary Miller Brueggemann and Sarah-Ann Smith live at Givens Highland Farms retirement community in Black Mountain, North Carolina. Tey marvel at the fact that, after all these years of going their separate ways, they are together again. All three are pleased with what is happening at Queens. Peggy shares the sad news that her husband, Newton, died on September 4. He was 92, and they had 62 happy years
together. Having old friends like Mary and Sarah-Ann, as well as new friends at Highland Farms, means a great deal to her at this time. Sarah-Ann has helped start a Great Decisions series on campus, and Mary undertook the tough task of leading a session on the global supply chain earlier this year. Sarah-Ann also recently became a member of the Resident’s Corporation Board.
1958
Betty Bell Brown works as an artist and art teacher, and is the author of her first book, Pretty Much: A Memoir. She graduated from UNC Wilmington with honors in art. She suffered a serious stroke in 2020 but still paints and writes.
During the pandemic lockdown, Mary Moore Mason wrote and had published in the United Kingdom — with distribution in
the UK and the United States — her colorful memoires, Goodbye Hoop Skirts - Hello World! Te Travels, Triumphs and Tumbles of a Runaway Southern Belle. To obtain a copy visit https://mary-moore-mason-

Te class expresses sympathy to Louise Cannon Whitley on the death of her husband, James R. Whitley, Sr. on May 19.
1959 Linda Reed Atkins and Frances DeArmon Evans are now both living at Te Cypress of Charlotte with their husbands, Murrey and Donnie. Tey love getting together with each other and other Queens alumni who live there.
1960 Suzanne Davis Ross, her daughter, Michele Walter, and her daughter, Bethany Walter, exhibited water media landscapes and portraits in Tree Generations of Painters at the Princeton Art Center in West Virginia. Te exhibit runs through March 2022.
1961 Lynn Jenkins just returned from a three-month visit to Cheltenham, United Kingsdom, visiting her daughter, Nicole Brocklebank-
Fowler, following hers and Tim’s beautiful wedding! Another highlight was visiting Cornwall on the beautiful coast, the filming site of the PBS Poldark series!

Polly Tompson Marshall and Robert Marshall’s youngest of four children was married for the first time on Polly’s 82nd birthday at the age of 49, the same age as his lovely bride Kate. Sadly, Polly lost her only sibling (her brother) to Alzheimer’s complications in August. Oldest granddaughter, twin Kelsey, was married in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, in September, and the whole family attended. Tis celebration was postponed from a year ago due to the pandemic.
After 25 years in West Point, Virginia, Gail Carter Nichols has moved to Sarasota, Florida, to be near two of her daughters, Gina Presson, who teaches at the University of Miami, and Dr. Tina Nowak, who is an anesthesiologist in Sarasota.
