anet Nelson ’77 inherited a love of Queens and all things library from her mother, the late Kathryn Preyer, founder of Friends of the Library (FOL).
Now, celebrating 50 years, FOL is dedicated to its founding purpose more than ever. As Preyer initially wrote, the goal of FOL is “to focus attention on the library as the center of learning on campus, to strengthen ties between Queens College and the Charlotte community… and to make useful gifts to the library whenever possible, the ‘icing on the cake.’ ” “FOL is a dynamic partner of the library and the
entire Charlotte community,” explained Nelson. “We celebrate 50 years of bringing outstanding literary and cultural events to campus.” Te idea of forming a support group for Everett
Library, then only a decade old, came from Preyer’s participation on the board of the Friends Group at UNC Greensboro, her alma mater. Trough this group, she saw, firsthand, how much community support could be created due to the interesting programs and library privileges that were offered to members. Te librarian of Queens at the time, Rose Anderson, was also enthusiastic about the idea, as was Telma Albright, faculty member and former dean of students, and President John Smiley.
TO FOCUS ATTENTION ON THE LIBRARY AS THE CENTER OF LEARNING ON CAMPUS AND TO STRENGTHEN TIES
BETWEEN QUEENS COLLEGE AND THE CHARLOTTE COMMUNITY.
