Anabel Knoll ’19 had doubts that she would be able to compete in the 2020 Olympic Games because she broke her elbow months before trials. Despite her injury, the German native persisted and secured a spot on the German women’s triathlon team. Knoll came to Queens after participating in


cross country and track for two years at another university in the United States. She became a Royal after hearing that the NCAA approved triathlon as an emerging sport for women. She then proceeded to make history by becoming the first-ever varsity triathlete to qualify for the Olympics in the sport. At her first Olympic Games this past summer

who encouraged me and believed in me. It’s difficult to describe the overwhelming joy I felt seeing our flag raised. Just as I couldn’t have done this alone, this wasn’t just a victory for me. Tis medal is for all of Team USA, for my family, for our country, and there is a huge sense of pride in that.


When people ask me how my Tokyo experience was, and I tell them it was amazing, all the highs and lows, laughter and tears, early mornings and late nights, triumphs and defeats… I mean it. Every moment of it will stay with me for the rest of my life, and I have so many people to thank for that. ■
