Rhett Sapp Turman’s ’65 art and studio were featured in the “Arts Issue” of Charleston magazine in May 2021. Rhett was celebrated in honor of her 50th year painting in Charleston, South Carolina.


1967 At Queens’ 2021 Commencement, Judy Leonard ’67 and husband, Paul honorary degree ’03, were the year’s community recipients of the Algernon Sydney Sullivan award for excellence of character and humanitarian service. Judy is a nurse by training, and in 1979, she made the first hospice call in Charlotte for Hospice and Palliative Care of the Charlotte Region. In her 15 years of hospice service, she helped build the foundation for the largest hospice in the Carolinas. Judy has been one of Queens’ most loyal alumni leaders, serving on the Queens Board of Trustees, as president of the Alumni Association Board, and on the Advisory Board of Presbyterian School of Nursing and Blair College of Health. Paul’s professional career began in ministry. Later in his career, he left traditional ministry to work with a city housing program and was later recruited by the John Crosland Company, where he served for many years in various executive leadership positions. After retiring, he used his extensive experience in the housing industry as a resource for service with Habitat for Humanity International, where he served as chairman of the board. Judy has also been committed to creating fair housing opportunities for all citizens. She is a past board chair of Habitat Charlotte, and she also organized the first Women Build

project for Our Towns Habitat. Together with Paul, she participated in eight Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Projects, as well as building efforts on five continents.

Kathy Tronco and Anne Craig, freshman roommates, had two mini reunions during the summer months to celebrate their 75th birthdays—one at Kiawah Island, South Carolina, and one in Greenwood, South Carolina. It was wonderful catching up on each others’ lives and reconnecting.


1969 Routledge Publishers, a division of Taylor and Francis, announced publication of Te Handbook of Children in the Legal System, edited by Ginger Conkle Calloway, Ph.D., and S. Margaret Lee, Ph.D. After graduating from Queens College, Ginger obtained her Ph.D. from North Carolina State University. She is the mother of Dr. Nathan Calloway, the mother- in-law of Mary Owen Calloway, MBA, and the grandmother of Wilson (9) and Coleman (7) Calloway. Ginger and her family live in Raleigh, North Carolina.


1970 LaNelle Dominick Barber and her husband, Robert, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in May. Tey live outside Charleston, South Carolina, on Bowens Island, where they run the family restaurant celebrating its 75th anniversary. Please visit them when you are in the area for great seafood! LaNelle and her roommate, Jennie Goodman Deal, continue to connect when they are close to the Asheville area.


enjoys cooking, reading, walking and currently ZOOM exercising. Husband Donnie is in his second year of retirement. Son Donnie, Jr. is in a temporary job at Wells Fargo after the bank sold his department to Principle. He is hard at work to find a permanent situation. No Covid-19 so far for this crowd, thank goodness. Best wishes to all.


In June, Sharon Roberts Young planned an adventure for herself plus Belk dorm friends: Maggie Fox Udall, Gretchen Bodenhamer Watts, Carolyn Hall and Ann Rhea Ham to Santa Fe, New Mexico, for four days of fun, sharing great memories, sightseeing and great food. Te group whitewater rafted on the Rio Grande, took a six-hour train ride on a steam engine-drawn train in Chama and visited the International Folklife Museum, proving they haven’t aged a bit since fall of 1966! Tey also celebrated Sharon and Randy’s 51st anniversary. Te couple’s son, Andrew, was there, too. To quote Mozart, “We are still amazed by the joy of the Belk girls being together and are so grateful to Sharon for bringing us all together”.

Beth Lawson Calvert and her husband, Dave, celebrated 44 years of marriage in June. Living in the Huntington area of West Virginia was a great place to raise their daughters, Kitty and Kemble. Beth continues to enjoy working at River Cities Community Church, serving as the director of the life skills ministry, which offers counseling and support groups. She is trying to stay in shape with gardening, bicycling or walking. Beth also serves on the advisory board for the Into Abba’s Arms Foundation and its orphange in Kenya.
