In April 1971, approximately 100 attendees, some Queens alumni and some not, met in what is now the Special Collections Room of the library. During this get-together, complete with coffee and cookies, short talks were given by Smiley and Anderson, as attendees signed up as charter members. Preyer and the other leaders agreed on how important, even necessary, it was to make membership and the board open to both on- and off-campus individuals in an effort to foster community in Charlotte. Soon, a challenge grant from Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation


boosted the group’s capacity, alongside its growing membership. Te 10th anniversary gala celebration dinner boasted nationally renowned North Carolina television journalist Charles Kuralt as the headliner. In 2001, a capital campaign raised money for an endowment


in support of the Friends’ signature annual Book and Author Event. Tis event and others throughout the year, on campus and now online, have offered rich exchanges with nationally well-known writers such as Amor Towles, Chris Bohjalian, A.J. Finn, Lee Smith, Wiley Cash, Marie Benedict and Kate Quinn, as well as local authors like Megan Miranda, Kimmery Martin and Judy Goldman. In 2017, the Ministrare Leadership Society recognized FOL for


its gifts of more than $1,000,000 to the library. Tree years later, the pandemic brought new challenges. But the lockdown was no
