A LEGEND’S LOVE OF HISTORY LIVES ON

One of Queens’ greats, Professor Emerita Mollie Davis, passed away on January 4, 2021, at the age of 88. A magnetic force in the classroom, Davis and her love of teaching reverberated across campus, impacting students, faculty and staff. The beloved history professor will be remembered for her

meaningful interactions with students and her ability to make the past come alive, often sharing firsthand accounts of major historical events. “Her classes were like a ride. We would talk for hours about life, politics, history, gossip, our families. She was generous,” recalled Heather Mims ’96, a student and long-time friend of Davis. “She sponsored my membership to the Democratic Women’s Club twice. We were friends for 25 years. I can’t imagine meeting anyone like her ever again.” Queens colleague and Professor Emeritus Bill Thompson said Davis lived some of our nation’s history. “In her teaching, she always

had a story, a recollection of some historic event in national affairs or in Georgia politics, something which had involved her family or her connections,” he added. “She was an early advocate for women’s rights and women’s history, as well as for racial equality and human decency.” Born in Newnan, Georgia, Davis attended Hollins College for

her undergraduate degree and went on to attend Emory University, where she obtained her master’s in education. She joined Queens in August of 1972 and taught history for nearly three decades, retiring in 2000. After retirement, Davis continued to teach courses as an adjunct professor until 2013. Said Thompson, “Mollie was surely one of a kind.”
