THINKING OUTSIDE OF THE BOX

Last fall Queens’ graphic design students got the opportunity to try their hand at packaging design through a partnership with Charlotte’s Company Box, an independently owned, all-in-one packaging platform for businesses. Cara Walters, marketing lead for Company Box, worked with Melissa Gamez, assistant professor of design and director of graphic design and studio art at Queens, to facilitate the collaboration. “Since we were all online in the

fall, I was looking for ways to get our students connected and offer them some opportunities for more interaction,” recalled Gamez. “Cara is interested in supporting education and allowed our students to design packaging that Company Box would print for free.” Walters presented a lecture to

the students and shared some of the company’s templates. Gamez proceeded to deploy those templates into a few classes and offered all of the students the opportunity to design a package. “I thought this would be a great experience for our students because we don’t currently offer a packaging class in graphic design.”

The result was a variety of colorful

box designs for businesses and products such as Amazon, Sephora, Fruity Pebbles and Harris Teeter Blueberry Cereal Bars. Graphic design major Kennedy Riddick’s ’23 package design for Divination Spellbook led to an internship at Company Box. “They were so receptive to letting our

students just play and explore this new medium,” said Gamez, adding that in the future students will be able to tour Company Box’s studio. “It’s a really unique opportunity for our students to explore some new things that they haven’t had exposure to in the past.”
