IN THE TAXI INDUSTRY

We’ve formulated 2 short-term strategies that we’d like all taxi companies in the UK to partake in:

Action 1 – Promote the positive aspects of your drivers online

We live in a world where social media dominates and one of the best tools we have to change the perceptions of the wider public is through the internet.

experiences working on the job. The range of stories and incidents included many unfortunate instances of physical violence and extremely racist verbal abuse, as well as deliberate damage to vehicles.

There were countless stories that would be worth mentioning but a comical example involving one of our Asian drivers (who happens to be very fair-skinned) is when he picked up a passenger who said to him: “I’m glad you’ve picked me up, I’m sick of seeing a P*ki driver all the time”. He felt he had no choice but to play along and try to change the subject, but it’s an example of the regular abuse many drivers have unfortunately become accustomed to.

My experience within the taxi trade has shown me that the majority of taxi drivers are amongst the most decent, honest, and hard-working people in the UK. Yet this is not the perception that many members of the public have who often stereotype taxi drivers.

This needs to change and Albatross Cars has implemented numerous strategies to reduce hate crimes. This includes strong support for anyone who has experienced abuse as well as promoting a positive portrayal of taxi drivers to the public on social media.

By standing together with our taxi drivers in reporting abuse, more people will be prosecuted. Thankfully, there are now many organisations which are proactive in helping people with hate crimes and it’s been a pleasure to have worked with Tell Mama, a fantastic organisation that works to counter them.

JOIN THE FIGHTBACK

Albatross Cars is proud to be leading a national campaign to improve the image of taxi drivers in the minds of the wider public. We encourage all taxi firms to join this noble endeavour and together, we can exterminate the scourge of hate crimes that has blighted our industry for many decades.

PHTM OCTOBER 2022

Albatross Cars has had tremendous success in going viral online with content displaying the best characteristics of our taxi drivers. Positive stories of noble deeds strike a chord with the public and are an excellent way to promote the truth about taxi drivers - that they are some of the hardest-working and honourable people in the UK today.

By promoting this content online and using hashtags (#AlbatrossHeroes on Facebook is one we use) we’ve seen an extraordinary response from the public and the appreciation has touched our hearts. We’ve had literally 1,000s of positive comments in the past month alone which is testament to the power of using social media to promote your message.

Action 2 – Participate in Hate Crime Awareness Week

National Hate Crime Awareness Week takes place between 8-16th October, and we strongly recommend all taxi companies participate in this wholeheartedly. As a first step, please contact Tell Mama: https://tellmamauk.org and they can point you in right direction.

Also contact your local police force and council ahead of that week and look to build a strong relationship based on jointly tackling hate crime in your community.

Albatross Cars has created a unique #HateCrimeAwarenessWeek video specifically for the taxi industry and we would love you to share this on your own taxi company’s social media (we can add your company logo on the video, contact me on the details below).

We’re also running a number of active campaigns during that week related to tackling hate hrimes, including a drop-in surgery, telephone consultations, fitness sessions and much more.

Fighting hate crime within the taxi industry has become a passion and I invite you all to join me in the crusade against the scourge of abuse.

Do you have any more ideas on how we can collectively eliminate hate in the taxi industry?

Send your comments to me: ateeq@albatrosscars.com I would love to hear them!
