MEMORIAL TO A SPECIAL MAN: DOUG SHERRY, MBE

A fundraiser who was awarded an MBE for his services to charity has been remembered with a special plaque at a Marylebone hos- pital.

Doug Sherry, a former patient of the London Clinic who died of can- cer in June at the age of 79, was honoured for his tireless services to three taxi driver charities.

In August, represen- tatives of the three

charities - the London Taxidrivers’ Fund for Underprivileged Chil- dren, the Taxi Driver of the Year Charity Fund and the London Taxi Benevolent Asso- ciation for War Disabled - held a remembrance service in his memory.

They donated a Diasend Modem, spe- cialist equipment to help the treatment of diabetics, to the Marylebone clinic to

honour Mr Sherry, who had the condi- tion. David Lessman, chairman of the Taxidrivers’ Fund for Underprivileged Chil- dren, told the St John’s Wood and Maida Vale Express: “Taxi trade charities all work hard for different causes. One person had a common bond and will be much missed. That man was Doug Sherry.”

Mr Sherry became

involved with the char- ities after running a car wash underneath St Pancras Station, where he came into regular contact with London cabbies. He later built a taxi work- shop, a canteen for taxi drivers and owned offices which he gave rent free to taxi chari- ties.

The Diasend Modem, together with a dedi- cation plaque, is now in use at the clinic.

Pictured are Harry Joel, Richard Hudd (War Disabled Charity), Dr Abrahams (London Medical), Russell Poluck (TDOY) and David Lessman (LTFUC) with the Diasend Modem and the plaque in honour of Doug Sherry at London’s Marylebone Hospital.

THE LONDON TAXIDRIVERS FUND FOR UNDERPRIVILEGED CHILDREN HOLD ANOTHER ‘FUN DAY’ AT COVENT GARDEN

For the second year running, the London Taxidrivers’ Fund for Underprivileged Chil- dren held another ‘fun day’ at the Covent Garden Piazza on Sunday 23rd August 2009 and what a great and enjoyable day it was. The committee arrived at the Piazza at 8am and immediately set about erecting two gazebos alongside their taxis, together with photo boards dis- playing many images of the numerous chil- dren’s outings they have run over the years. Tombola and quiz tables were set up in the gazebos and on sale were ladies belts and accessories, mugs, tee shirts and fun aprons, which had been donated to help

the LTFUC raise funds, with lots of free good- ies and sweets being handed out to all the delighted children who passed by.

Doug Cheshire of the London Vintage Taxi Association had joined us with his 75 year old vintage Austin taxi and this attracted great inter- est, especially among the many tourists present who were giv- ing donations and taking photos non stop and we are deeply grateful to Doug for giving up his time to spend the whole day with us. Congratulations go to the winner of the quiz, taxi driver Carl Buttigieg, who won a Clicquot Traveller case containing a bottle of
