SHAME SHAME
A private hire driver has been jailed for killing an 80-year-old great-grandfather in a horror smash.
JAIL FOR BRADFORD CABBIE WHO KILLED ‘A SPECIAL MAN’ ous driving.
Zahoor Hussain, 24, from Girlington, had been “showing off” to a friend he had just picked up in a Vauxhall Astra hire car when he hit a vehicle being driv- en by former RAF mechanic Harvey Kirk on March 30 last year. Hussain had been going far too fast sec- onds before smashing into Mr Kirk’s Ford Fiesta as it pulled out into Thornton Road, a
jury at Bradford Crown Court was told. Mr Kirk, who had been driving home after pay- ing a visit to relatives, died at the scene from multiple injuries. His wife of 53 years, Betty Kirk, was left with serious injuries including a brain haemorrhage, broken bones and teeth and bruises to her body. According to the Brad- ford Telegraph and Argus, Judge Jonathan Rose jailed Hussain after the jury found him guilty of causing Mr Kirk’s death by danger-
The judge jailed Hus- sain for four years and disqualified him from driving for four years. He said: “The fact that you carried out an act of speeding moments after picking up this passenger indicated to me that you were showing off to this man by driving with a reckless disregard for the speed limit.” A family spokesman said: “This is the out- come that we would have hoped for but we have still lost someone very special.”
SIX YEARS FOR PAISLEY DRIVER WHO RAPED 16-YEAR-OLD
A driver who raped a teenage girl he picked up in the street has been jailed for more than six years.
Sean Moynihan, 24, spotted the 16-year- old, who got into his car after mistakenly thinking it was a pri- vate hire car. He took her to GIeniffer Braes in Paisley, where he forced her to have sex before eventually tak- ing his victim home. Moynihan - a convict- ed robber - was found guilty of rape after a trial at the High Court in Glasgow.
Judge John Beckett QC told him a “signifi-
cant” sentence was necessary to mark the seriousness of the attack and to protect the public.
He jailed Moynihan for six years and ordered him to be supervised for a further three years on his release. The judge added another five months to the prison term after Moynihan had admit- ted before the trial to being in possession of a knife.
According to the Glas- gow Evening Times, the court heard how the girl had been under the influence of alcohol when Moyni-
han allowed her into his car on April 26 last year.
Judge Beckett told him: “The complainer was in a vulnerable position. She had fall- en when you encountered her. You did not induce her to think you were a taxi driver, but for her own reason she thought you were. You took advantage of her vul- nerability and raped her.”
Moynihan, who showed no emotion as he was sentenced, was also placed on the Sex Offenders’ List indefinitely.
CONVICTED PIMP WAS TEACHER AND CABBIE IN CANTERBURY
Jailed pimp Tim Blake- Powell worked as a taxi driver in Canter- bury for the last two years after being granted a licence by the council. Blake-Powell, 47, used to teach at King Ethelbert School in Birchington, and was convicted in July of controlling prostitutes for financial gain, along with his ex-wife Emma.
He became a licensed private hire driver for the firm Cabco Canter- bury soon after the investigation into his
prostitution racket began.
According to the taxi firm’s owner, Robert Jones, the company was aware of the inves- tigation before employing him and made sure to keep an eye on their new recruit. Mr Jones said his business has the tech- nology to track his employees’ taxis, some of which have CCTV in them. He also said he made sure Mr Blake-Powell was not given jobs involving lone women or chil- dren.
Although Mr Blake- Powell was under investigation when he applied for his licence, the council said it was powerless to prevent it from being granted. A council spokesman said: “Mr Blake-Powell was given an enhanced Criminal Records Bureau check when he first applied, it did not pick anything up so there was no reason not to issue him with a licence.”
But he will now not be able to apply for a licence for at least five years.
SCARBOROUGH TAXI WOMAN’S FALSE ROBBERY CLAIM
A 24-year-old taxi driv- er who claimed she was the victim of an attempted robbery in Scarborough, has admitted perverting the course of justice. The Scarborough Evening News reports that Jade Fowler made a false claim of rob- bery to Scarborough police after suffering a self-inflicted arm injury. Fowler, from Bridling- ton, claimed she had picked up two men from Bridlington Spa at about 5am on Feb- ruary 1 who had turned violent when she dropped them off in Scarborough.
In an interview with the Bridlington Free Press, before her arrest, she claimed she fought back and punched one of them, making his nose bleed, before locking herself in the car and driving off. She denied perverting the course of public justice at an earlier hearing and a two-day trial was set to begin at York Crown Court at the end of July. But Fowler, who has no previous convictions, changed her plea and admitted her guilt. Her barrister Charlotte Baines said Fowler had made an attempt on
her own life following the previous hearing. She said Fowler had been admitted to a mental health unit but was now being treated twice a week at home by Community Psychi- atric Nurses, although there had yet to be a definitive diagnosis in her case.
Judge Shaun Spencer QC agreed to adjourn sentencing until Sep- tember 21 so reports could be obtained. He ordered for the pre-sen- tence report to be prepared on an all- options basis to include the possibility of a cus- todial sentence.
