PHTM readers will recall the front page of our July issue, which told of the murder of Birmingham driver Mohammed Arshad. Over two months down the line, the mur- derer has not yet been found. A forensics team is examining DNA samples from local residents, and a house-to-house trawl expected to last sever- al weeks involves men aged between 14 and 40 from the Hawkesley estate near Shannon Road, where Mr Arshad’s blue Ford Galaxy was found abandoned, having their photo taken. They are also being asked to give their fin- gerprints and a DNA swab in the latest move to trace the per- son who attacked Mr Arshad in his taxi, stabbing him in the head several times. It is not compulsory for anyone to give a sample; however, if people refuse, further enquiries will need to be carried out to establish why. All inno- cent samples will be destroyed afterwards. A spokesperson would not reveal whether or not the killer’s blood was also found in the car, but told the Redditch and Alcester Standard: “As the vehicle in question is a taxi, there are many foren- sic opportunities. What we are trying to do is eliminate people from the enquiries.”

RECOGNITION Officers are still appealing for anyone to come forward who recognises the man captured on CCTV. The man, who gave his name to the taxi firm as Peter, is believed to be the last customer in Mr
Arshad’s taxi before he died.
He rang Kings Norton firm A Cars at 8.19pm that night from a tele- phone kiosk near the Spar shop on Mony- hull Hall Road, asking to be picked up from outside Broadmeadow School which Mr Arshad did at 8.29pm. Less than ten minutes later Arshad was spot- ted by a passer-by, lying seriously injured in the roadside on Wast Hills Lane. He died in Selly Oak Hos- pital the following morning.
Det Supt Sheila Thornes said: “We are receiving tremendous support from the com- munity on the Hawkesley estate and are still keen to speak to people who recog- nise the man in the CCTV image or can help us identify Peter. We are keeping an open mind as to the motive for the killing.” Police have revealed that the weapon believed to have been used to kill Mr Arshad has been recovered. A knife was discovered in Mr Arshad’s Galaxy after he was stabbed. Detectives said that the person who car- ried out the attack is likely to have had blood on his clothing. Det Supt Sheila Barnes said: “If you know anyone who came home that night (22 July) with blood on them please contact the incident room. If they are not responsi- ble they can easily be eliminated from our enquiries.”
CRIMEWATCH
Following the televis- ing of a reconstruction on the BBC pro- gramme Crimewatch, murder detectives have been following
up a number of new leads after it emerged that a man called police claiming to be the killer of Mr Arshad. In the 999 call made last month, the man appears to taunt police by saying: “I’m walking around now and the police will never ever cop me.” When asked if he killed Mr Arshad he added: “I’m telling you I done it.”
According to the Birm- ingham Mail, police said they were not sure whether the call was genuine or a hoax, but they had received a good response after the appeal on Crimewatch last month.
During the reconstruc- tion, CCTV images of a man believed to be Mr Arshad’s last known fare were also re- shown.
Det Supt Thornes also revealed that Mr Arshad was stabbed six times in the head in an “onslaught so fero- cious” that it broke the blade of the knife. Following the appeal, Det Supt Thornes said: “We have had a number of calls about the identity of the per- son in the CCTV image and about the identity of the person who made the call.”
Mr Arshad was mar- ried with three small sons, and is sadly missed by family, friends and col- leagues. West Mercia Police have put up a £10,000 reward for anyone who provides informa- tion leading to the arrest and conviction of the killer.
Anyone with informa- tion can call police on 0300 333 3000 or Crimestoppers in con- fidence on 0800 555 111.
