STABBED TAMESIDE CABBIE LOSES FIGHT FOR LIFE
A taxi driver stabbed in an attempted robbery early this year has died in hospital, prompting lawyers to rethink the charges brought against his attackers. Grandad-of-six Tony Leigh, 62, amazed doctors after surviving being stabbed in the stomach. A damaged kidney had to be removed but it was found that his other had not been function- ing properly and he had bowel cancer. Mr Leigh, from Auden-
shaw, was told that he could have lived for another two years before symptoms showed themselves. He had picked up two men at a pub in New- ton Heath and dropped them at an address in Clayton. The pair have admitted attempting to rob the driver and one also admitted wound- ing him.
They are waiting to be sentenced for those crimes but following Mr Leigh’s death the Crown Prosecution
Service says it intends to review the charges. His son Darren 28, told the Tameside Advertis- er: “Words can’t describe how we feel about the people who did this. Dad was the sort who would help anyone. He was chased and stabbed with a blade that went through what we now know was his only good kidney, and it also penetrated his lung. “Nobody gave him any real hope of making it, but he fought bravely.

“In the end he asked for dialysis treatment to be stopped, because it had become so painful. He had just had enough and it was only prolonging his agony.” Regulars at the Lazy Toad pub across the road from his flat have described him as a gentleman.
Landlord Alan Graham who regularly visited him in hospital, said: “Tony had stopped working nights because of an earlier incident when he had

been threatened. He had just started to do them again because he needed the cash, nobody could believe what happened to him. He didn’t have a bad bone in his body. “He wasn’t expected to make it through the night at first, and despite the best efforts of doctors and nursing teams at North Manchester General Hospital, he started to decline fast. “Tony was a real gent. He would quite often
treat a couple of his customers - elderly ladies - to lunch at the pub, and would get properly dressed for the occasion.”
A spokesman for the Crown Prosecution Service confirmed they would be reviewing the file and any new med- ical evidence presented to them by Greater Manchester Police. Two men, a 19-year- old and 18-year-old, are awaiting sentence in connection with the attack in January.
