PORRIDGE, HAGGIS,

NEEPS AND TATTIES... won’t even attempt the accent!

Yes, this issue of PHTM has a distinctly Scottish flavour, as it’s all happening north of the Border. More on that shortly... but first we must pay tribute to Stuart Lud- lam. As you’ve seen on page one, he is the 51st driver to be mur- dered in our trade since we started hav- ing to keep such grim statistics. Who would have believed that taxi and private hire driv- ing would end up being as hazardous a job as being in the emergency services, especially the police force. A sobering thought.

Now then, back up North. As mentioned above, we won’t even attempt to capture the regional accents that proliferate in this most attractive and

welcoming of areas. There’s nothing worse than a badly imitated Scots accent in print, or a wrongly utilised Scotticism anywhere... we’ll leave that to the sports commentators. Back to this issue: Firstly we stop off in Glasgow to visit Thornliebank Cars; then we swing over to West Lothian to chat to Glenn Waters. Then we step back for a wider overview as Opinion brings you the latest legislation to affect our trade, the Scottish Statutory Instrument bringing in operator licensing to booking offices. You will note that we use the term ‘booking offices’ as opposed to ‘private hire booking offices’... this legisla- tion also includes

licensing of hackney carriage booking offices for taxi fleets of over three vehicles. Watch this space, all ye readers south of the Border. Is this a por- tent of things to come? More in Opinion. Also within our departmental fea- tures, you will see an item covering the booking office legis- lation being implemented in Ren- frewshire. We’ve even got the Scottish influ- ence running through Point of Sale, with the ChoiceQuote article. So as we said, there’s a lot going on in Scot- land at present... let’s hope we’ve covered everything for the time being, but most impor- tantly the deadline looming for operators to make application for their booking office

licences. Any ques- tions? You know where to get in touch...

Readers will notice that, as usual, we include the Taxi Fares League Tables in this issue... understand- ably there’s not an awful lot of tariff increase activity at present, but folk still like to know where they stand in the over- all scheme of things. Incidentally, check out the Fares and Fees section - more and

more price wars are surfacing during these struggling times. Is it any wonder?

Dereg Dilemma takes the biscuit as the most controversial department right now. You would not be the slightest bit surprised at how often the Asso- ciation phones ring concerning this meaty issue, and how many are asking the ques- tion: How do we get our council to re-reg- ulate? It’s an uphill struggle, impossible

in most areas; but all we can suggest is, provide concrete doc- umented evidence of the financial hardship being experienced by the trade in your area, place strong empha- sis on public safety and carbon footprint aspects, and take it all the way to the top. Meanwhile, get stuck in, get in touch with anything you wish to put in th’paper, and happy autumnals. It’s even stopped raining for a few days!
