NEWTON ABBOT CABBIE RELIEVED AT TAXI LICENCE APPEAL OUTCOME
An under-age taxi driv- er will be able to carry on driving until he turns 21 in November. According to the New- ton Abbot and Mid Devon Advertiser, Wes- ley Westaway, 20, applied for his licence in good faith but Teign- bridge council officers failed to spot that he was too young and granted the licence in January. When the matter came to light his licence was suspend- ed on public safety grounds. He appealed, which meant he has been allowed to contin- ue driving pending an appeal hearing.
Wes appeared at South Devon Magis- trates to fix a date but the earliest hearing date was November 18, 11 days after his birthday when he would be allowed to hold his taxi driver’s licence anyway. Afterwards, Wes, who works for Teignbridge Taxis, claimed he was ‘ratted on’ as part of a dirty tricks campaign against his employer. He said a rival taxi driv- er investigated his date of birth then rang the council to complain. “Ever since that, the rank has made it quite a nasty place to be.”
He said he was relieved at the out- come as he has invested £4,000 in his taxi and cannot afford to let it stand idle. Mark Hewings, director of Teignbridge Taxis, admitted: “We’re not well liked because we are quite successful.” The company is the largest in town, oper- ating 26 hackney carriages. “We want him to be driving, he is a decent driver. We’ve got no argument with the council. It was a gen- uine mistake and Wesley slipped through the net.”

Calls for official legisla- tion to limit the number of hours taxi drivers are allowed to work have been backed by Birmingham airport’s cab provider - Passen- ger Transport Solutions (PTS). Road safety charity Brake is calling on the Government to act fast to avoid further casual- ties similar to Gary Glymond, who was knocked down and killed by a taxi in South Yorkshire on his 18th birthday last year.
The driver admitted he had worked over 13 hours and Mr Gly- mond’s family have joined Brake in their rally for legislation to be introduced.
Chief executive of PTS, Mike Gilmore, said he would be behind any form of legislation that helps protect the safety of both passengers and taxi drivers at one of the biggest ranks in Birmingham.
“I’m fully behind the idea of introducing
legislation that aims to protect passengers and drivers them- selves,” he told the Birmingham Post. Many taxi drivers’ con- tracts make them exempt from the Euro- pean working time directive, which would limit them to working a 48-hour week with a 20-minute break every six hours.
The DfT said drivers had a duty not to drive when tired but there were no plans for reg- ulation.
