UNSUNG HEROES
SCARBOROUGH CABBIES STEP IN TO DETAIN ATTACKER
The 21-year-old victim of an unprovoked assault could have been severely injured if it had not been for two Scarborough taxi drivers who stepped in and restrained his attacker.
The taxi drivers, who have not been named, were on duty at the railway station on Tuesday 18 August when they saw the suspect chasing his victim.
He knocked the victim to the ground and started viciously punching and kicking
him around the face and head, before the drivers stepped in and separated the pair. One eyewitness, who would not give their name, told the Scar- borough Evening News: “One youth was chasing another youth when he tripped him up. He hit him around the face with his fists and started kicking him in the head.” He added that the two brave drivers inter- vened and managed to hold down the struggling attacker until the police arrived
at the scene. He said: “I was told that the vic- tim had suffered facial injuries and a swollen face.”
The alarm was raised at 3.25pm on the Tues- day and the matter is being dealt with by officers from British Transport Police (BTP).
A BTP spokeswoman said that a 17-year-old male was arrested by officers from North Yorkshire Police in connection with the alleged unprovoked assault on a 21-year- old man.

PAGE 20 POLICE CHASE MEN IN PRESTON CABBIES CAR
An heroic taxi driver has told how police offi- cers jumped in his cab before he gave chase to two on-the-run men. Father of one Aadil Iqbal, 34, saw two teenagers burst out of the railway station and run off towards Fisher- gate with police in hot pursuit.
Realising they were getting away, the two officers jumped in his cab and told Mr Iqbal to drive after them. The pair were spotted again on Corporation Street but when offi- cers got out of the cab to confront them they
split up and sprinted in opposite directions. Mr Iqbal drove after one of them in his car, at one point reversing in Corporation Street to block his escape route three times before police came and made an arrest. Mr Iqbal insisted he was no hero and said he was only doing his civic duty.
He told the Lancashire Evening Post: “I saw the two boys coming out from the rail station and the policemen were behind them. They were at the Cor- poration Street lights
and the police jumped out. As soon as they saw the police they ran off again.
“When I saw they could not catch them I decided to follow one of them.” Police eventually arrived to arrest him. Insp Mike Wedder- burn, of the British Transport Police, said he was planning to send Mr Iqbal a letter of appreciation.
He said: “The taxi driv- er assisted them a great deal. He picked them up and directed them towards where these two had gone.”
A hero taxi driver who foiled an armed raid is living in fear after thugs smashed up his cab as he cowered inside. The Thatcham cabbie’s ordeal began when a terrified youth approached his vehicle to point out a gang armed with crowbars breaking into the Amer- ican Golf Centre in Bath Road, Thatcham. The driver, who has asked for his identity to be withheld for fear of reprisals, drove the youth to safety before racing back to the scene.

dressed in black from head to toe.
They raced over and began to batter his taxi with the crowbars, wrecking the mirrors, panelling and brakes before smashing through the wind- screen, causing damage costing thou- sands of pounds. The driver managed to start the engine and raced off towards Newbury police sta- tion to report what had happened.
With the raid still in progress, he called the police but the light on his mobile phone alerted the masked gang, who were
He told the Newbury Weekly News: “My concern now is reper- cussions. It was a very scary incident. I was trying to do the right thing but I have lost earnings as I could not continue to work that
He added: “I’m not going to take night jobs in Thatcham or Newbury any more. It will limit my income to an extent. I’m thinking of the effect on my life and livelihood.”
American Golf Centre assistant manager Nick Woodage said that he arrived at work at 8.50am to discover the damage.
He added: “It was lucky for us that they didn’t get into the building but we lost quite a bit of money on Friday, it’s frustrating.” Thames Valley Police spokeswoman Laura Deane asked anyone with information to contact the police on 0845 8505 505.
