ABERDEEN FIRMS’ COMMUNITY SPIRIT TAXI FIRMS SUPPORT POLICE
FREE CONDOMS DISTRIBUTED
Revellers using an Aberdeen taxi firm to go home after a night out in the city are to be given free condoms as part of an initiative to tackle the number of sexually transmitted diseases. From World Aids Day, anyone using a Com- Cab taxi after 9pm will have access to free condoms. Grampian World Aids Day Committee initiat- ed the scheme with support from NHS Grampian, in a bid to cut the number of peo- ple who contract HIV or a sexually transmitted infection from having unprotected sex. Since January there have been 33 new cases of HIV reported in Grampian, and a recent survey has revealed a strong link between the incidence
of HIV and STIs and binge drinking. Dr Steve Baguley, who conducted the research, said: “The survey demonstrated the link between alcohol consumption and risky sex. We know that peo- ple do not always carry condoms with them and some people have never even tried them, but they are the best defence.”
Graeme Murray, taxi fleet services manager at the firm, told the Aberdeen Press and Journal: “We are delighted to be associ- ated with the initiative in conjunction with NHS Grampian.” An evaluation of the pilot, which will include feedback from taxi driv- ers, will determine if the scheme should be rolled out across the region.
IN SPREADING SAFE DRINKING MESSAGE
Two Aberdeen taxi companies have teamed up with Grampian Police to help promote sensible drinking over the fes- tive period.
Business cards bearing safety messages will be given to everyone who travels with ComCab and Rainbow City taxis during the next few weeks. Constable Jim Watson, from the crime reduction unit, told the Aberdeen edition of The Press & Journal, “We want the people of Aberdeen to enjoy their party nights but we want them to remember to drink responsibly and to stay safe.
“Both taxi firms carry out thousands of jour- neys to and from the city centre every week- end and this is an ideal way to reach the public with this message.”
Each card has the num- ber of the taxi company on one side and a police safety message, under the banner: Moment of Madness, on the other.
The message reminds people to drink respon- sibly and consider how they are going to get home safely. ComCab sales manager Ernie
Beaton said: “We are delighted to have joined forces with Grampian Police in their campaign for safe and sensible drinking.”
