JANUARY 2009 IN THE NEWS

GLOBAL SOLAR TAXI PROJECT PUTS STUDENT SAM BEHIND THE LENS

Student Sam White was given the chance of a lifetime to hone his photography skills as part of a worldwide project.

The 21-year-old from Exmouth was chosen to take photographs for the Solar Taxi proj- ect, a solar-powered car travelling around the world to highlight the issue of global warming.

Sam, a photography student at Bournemouth Universi- ty, recently told the Exeter Express and Echo: “The guy behind the project, Louis Palmer, has done vari- ous things before and now he has built this solar powered car. “It is just like a taxi and the idea is that people hop on and off it to see what it is like.

“I am going to be

Louis’ photographer for the Europe part of his global tour, so I will go with him to France, Germany, Ireland and Sweden.

I emailed him through the website and he got back to me saying it would be fine for me to come along.” Sam travelled with the Solar Taxi project for the whole of November and part of December before he returned

home for Christmas. He said: “The Solar Taxi is driven by Louis and it was designed and built by him too.

“One of his stops was at the Kyoto Climate Change Conference.” He added: “I am really excited about the trip. It will be a great expe- rience and a fantastic project to photograph because it is unique.” Louis, who was born in Budapest and

moved to Switzerland before he was two, has travelled all over the world in a variety of ways.

He toured Africa on a bike in 1994; in 1996 he won an award for the most outstanding flight of the year when he crossed the USA in a micro-light; he achieved the world record in 1998 for the smallest aircraft across South America; and crossed Asia by car in 2001. So far, the Solar Taxi has visited countries in Europe, Asia, the Mid- dle East and the USA and Canada.

The picture shows the Solar Taxi on its jour- ney throughout Europe, highlighting the benefits of driving a taxi that doesn’t rely on fossil fuels for its power.

TAXI LANES TO OPEN FOR WOLVERHAMPTON CABS

New taxi lanes are set to be created on busy city centre roads in Wolverhampton which were previously banned for all vehicles except buses.

Highways chiefs are considering opening up major city routes fol- lowing claims by taxi drivers that revellers are waiting too long to be picked up after nights out.

The biggest problem drivers are encounter- ing is Market Street, where the road into the city centre is for buses only.

Nasim Ullah, chair- man and secretary of NPHA affiliated Wolverhampton Hack- ney Carriage Drivers’ Association, told the Express and Star: “We have put it in writing that we want lanes that are for

buses only opened up to taxi drivers.

“The biggest problem is when we try and drive into the city cen- tre down Market Street. It is bus only so we have to take a detour around the roads and it keeps people waiting. “We encounter similar problems elsewhere in the city - if we try and go down the Grand Theatre from Railway Drive it’s the same.” If the move is approved, it will have to go before the licensing committee. Tory councillor Carl Husted, vice-chair of the licensing commit- tee, said: “There is nothing more infuriat- ing to me than empty bus lanes.” Highways bosses were meeting to discuss the pro- posal.
