With only one taxi rank in the town, in High Street, for six cars, taxi firms are baffled by the council’s decision to scrap the Commons rank. A taxi driver, who did not
want to be named, told the Harborough Mail that at a meeting in Jan- uary Harborough District Council said that spaces would be allo- cated in the £500,000 redesign of the Memori- al Garden near Tesco. The taxi driver said: “At the time of the re-vamp the section was painted blue and had the word ‘taxi’ painted in white
across it. But not long after this it was re-painted blue and is now a pickup point for shoppers. ” A Harborough District Council spokesman said: “It is the Highways Agency which provides on-street taxi ranks not the district council. However, taxi drivers can drop off and pick up in the drop-off point in the Commons car park, but not sit in it.”
ABERGAVENNY TAXI RANK CHANGES SUPPORTED BY COUNCIL
Members of Abergaven- ny Town Council voted to change the layout of local taxi ranks.
A letter from Linda O’Gorman, licensing offi- cer at Monmouthshire County Council, states that the change has been proposed by the Taxi Association due to the change in the town’s layout.
According to the Aber- gavenny Chronicle, discussions took place between police ser- geants, traffic wardens, taxi representatives and MCC officers and it was proposed to keep the ranks at the Bus Station, King Street and Nevill Street as they are, with spaces for two vehicles each.
However, plans include extending the rank at Frogmore Street from two vehicles to four and placing a new shared rank with loading bay after 6pm at Cross Street for two to four vehicles to cope with demand for an enhanced night time economy. Town councillors agreed to support the plans.
BEXHILL TOWN CENTRE TAXI RANK CHANGES
Bexhill Taxi Drivers’ Association has told the public of impending changes in town centre ranks.
With the agreement of the association, the county highways
authority is doing away with the ranks in Parkhurst Road and Devonshire Road and creating a new rank from the junction of Parkhurst Road and Devonshire Road.
According to the Bex- hill- on-Sea Observer, Association chairman Dave Dickens-Smith said the new lay-out should be simpler and therefore safer to operate.
Lytham are concerned new taxi ranks will deter shoppers.

The ranks on Henry Street and Park Street have been put in place for taxis after 6pm when shops have closed and bars and restaurants begin to open in a bid to boost night time economy.
But traders say shop- pers are confused by the new road markings.
Edward Jones Invest- ments on Park Street, told the Blackpool Gazette: “People don’t realise it’s a night-time taxi rank so they’re not parking there. I think it’s caused a lot of con- cern.”
Fylde Council officials say parking for the day time economy will not be affected and are reminding drivers that parking on the

ranks in the evenings will not be allowed, although there will be a grace period to get used to the new mark- ings.
Cllr David Raves, chairman of the licens- ing panel, said: “We are striving to help the economy as much as possible and we hope enabling people to get into town in an evening will be an added boost.”
