SHAME! SHAME! SHAME! NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE
CABBIE KICKED GRAN IN VICIOUS ATTACK
A rogue taxi driver left an injured and distressed grand- mother lying on the pavement after a dis- pute over the fare. Iris Savers had been out for a night on the town with the girls when she decided to get a taxi from Grey’s Night- club in Newcastle to her home.
But during the jour- ney there was a dispute over the fare and the taxi driver raced off from her home to Bea-
consfield Street, Newcastle, where he pulled Iris from the taxi and kicked her.
He sped off, leaving the distressed 53- year -old grandmother-of-six lying on the pave- ment unable to get up in freezing con- ditions. Her arm was broken and the bone in her elbow had been chipped. In shock, Iris told the Newcastle upon Tyne Evening Chronicle: “We got
back to my house and he asked for £9.50. I told him I would give him a fiver as that was all I had. He was ranting and raving on. So I told him I would get some money off my husband. But he reversed and drove off. At the time I thought he was try- ing to frighten me. “I asked him where he was going and he stayed quiet. That’s when I got really scared.

knew he was pulling me out of the taxi. He threw me to the ground and kicked me. I had a severe pain in my arm and then the taxi sped off. I was crying out for help as I was in so much pain and I couldn’t get up.” Around ten minutes later,
another taxi
driver saw Iris on the ground and picked her up. He took her back home and refused to let her pay.

who that was as he was so kind and I would like to thank him. I don’t want this kind of thing to ever happen to anyone else. I thought he was going to murder me.”
Detectives are appealing for wit- nesses. The taxi was a dark-coloured saloon car and the driver is described as medium build, with dark hair, olive skin complexion and he speaks with a for- eign accent. Police
are also keen to speak to the taxi driv- er who came to Iris’s aid.
Mmmm - we would also wish to extend our gratitude to the driver who rescued Iris from such a hor- rendous and dispicable incident at the mercy of another licence hold- er. Surely the term ‘fit and proper’ could never be used to describe any driver who would treat his passenger in such a manner. - Ed.
