THE BERNIE THE BOOK COLUMN ANYONE FOR DV-ENNIS?
NOVAK SET TO EXTEND DOMINANCE
It’s summer and attention now turns to summer sports and whats more representative than tennis at SW19 and Wimbledon. I confess, I can see no better even money shots than NOVAK DJOKOVIC to defend his crown, he is still peerless around these grass courts. But Evens isn’t going to keep the Wolf from the door, so let’s look at two players still under the radar…just! And until the draw comes out, let’s temper our bets and maybe look for performance-related odds to turn a profit with the likes of Sporting Index where you don’t have to get to the latter stages to realise a profit. First bet is FELIX AUGER ALIASSIME who has a game perfect for grass. Big server, big temperament, what more do you need for grass. And at 16/1 big return (no pun intend- ed). Last year I gave you MATTEO BERRETTINI at 20/1 in the outright market and 8/1 in ex Novak. .result winner…and this year I give you the same… but this time at a not so juicy 10/1. They are my three against the field. And so to the womens where Serena’s crown has been taken
by various upstarts. First pick is for the not so young American teenager, CORI GAUFF at 18/1 and one of the more experienced players on the circuit, SIMONE HALEP at 16/1. There seems to be a new business model in American Football’s NFL recently. Started by Tampa two years ago in bolstering their attacking options by signing a proven quarterback at the expense of future draft picks, it worked. They signed Tom Brady towards the end of his career and hey presto…instant success, another Super- bowl win for the franchise and the GOAT. Last year, the Rams copied the same format, in jetting in Mathew Stafford from Detroit to complement their fear- some Defense and replace their previous franchise Q B. Result.. another Superbowl. This year, as alluded to in my column in April, the DENVER BRONCOS have done the same with the stellar signing of Superbowl winner Russell Wilson from Seattle to com- plete their side. I hope you took my advice and backed them at 20/1.
But hold on a moment…THE INDIANAPOLIS COLTS have done the same!! Future wilderness years for short term gains in the signing of Matt Ryan (another quality QB in the autumn of his career) from the Falcons. Last year, the
JUNE 2022
Colts were one of the hottest teams going into the Play-offs after a woeful 1- 4 start to the season, with a great all round game mis-managed by Wentz. They inexplicably lost at the Jags (a team at 2-14) that let in other wild card
teams.Result…QB out-QB in. The Colts are currently double carpet – take the 33/1 now!! Finally look to the CLEVELAND BROWNS to do the same this
year..currently 20/1 but watch this space.
And so to the Open, this year back at its spiri- tual home, St Andrews. As venues go its really a birdie fest, not like some venues like Carnoustie or Muirfield,
with a standard scratch of
69.So the advantage of links courses that Europeans have can be abated by a good putter with some experience of the Scottish crowds. So who? Well my standout tip is JORDAN SPEITH at 16/1, now that he is in some resurgency. As clutch putters go, there’s none better. My alternative is perennial performer LOIUS OOSTERHUIZEN at a juicy 33/1. Formula One returns to Silverstone for the British Grand Prixi in July but it might be the time to have an interest on the Mercedes of Lewis and George to return to competitive- ness as Mercedes are talking about being more up for the job. At this early stage I have a feeling about GEORGE RUSSELL for a podium finish and at 10/1 that will do for me. Finally to Royal Ascot which takes place in mid-June. Obviously bookmakers have only priced up so far for some of the races but of those that they have I advise the following: PERSIAN FORCE in the Coventry on Day 1, Ultra Professional and at 4/1 represents great value. I also like the look of KYPRIOS in the Ascot Gold Cup at 9/2. Aiden O’Brien has a great tradition in this race and the wide mar- gin victory recently of Kyprios can only add to his genius. Finally, in the Ribblesdale, a race that often goes to also- rans in the Oaks, or not quite also-rans but horses which haven’t won, I really fancy ABOVE THE CURVE for Joseph O’Brien. Currently on offer at 12/1 pre-the Oaks this week- end.
Until next month…good punting.
