WREXHAM FARE DODGER WHO THREATENED AND ASSAULTED CABBIE SPARED JAIL
A man accused of failing to pay a £30 fare from Prestatyn to Abergele and repeatedly hitting a taxi driver has been spared jail. The Daily Post reports that Adam Hughes, 22, from Wrexham, admitted making off without payment last October, threatening behaviour, and common assault on Istvan Harnos. Prosecutor Diane Williams said at Llan- dudno court that the victim was cut and bruised. She added that Hughes
was on a suspended sentence for assault imposed a few months earlier. Andrew Scott, defending, said Hughes had been under the influence of alcohol and accepted he shouldn’t have behaved as he did but had since “significantly” reduced his drinking and stayed out of trouble. District judge Gwyn Jones extended the period of the suspended sentence. Hughes must also carry out 180 hours
PASSENGER FINED FOR RACIALLY ABUSING SHROPSHIRE CABBIE
A taxi passenger was locked inside and driven to Welshpool Police Station after she racially abused the driver and refused to pay a £106 fare. The County Times reports that Julia Pugh called the Shrop- shire-based cabbie a “psychopath”, and unleashed a number of swearwords and offensive racist slurs during the journey. Pugh, 35, pleaded guilty to racially abusing the driver when she appeared in court on Tuesday, 10 May. Welshpool Magistrates’ fined Pugh £401 with an uplift due to the racially aggravated nature of the offence and ordered her to also pay a £40 victim surcharge and £85 court costs.
of unpaid work and pay £530 compen- sation and £85 costs.
Judge Jones said the “unpleasant” offences had taken some time to reach the court. Hughes had also worked constructively with the probation ser- vice to deal with the lack of self-control that he’d shown on two occasions, adding: “It would be unjust on this occasion to activate the suspended sentence.”
PENSIONER FINED AFTER RACIALLY ABUSING CABBIE IN WALLSEND
A pensioner has been fined after racially abusing a cabbie outside a pub. Chroniclelive reports that Kenneth Rouse had ordered the cab to take him home but told the driver he wouldn’t pay his waiting time. Rouse, 73, became aggressive and banged the passenger window. The cabbie refused to give Rouse a lift, which made him more agitated and he called the driver a racist name, which was overheard and reported to police. At North Tyneside Magistrates’ Court, Rouse admitted a racially-aggravated public order offence. He was fined £180 and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £34 victim surcharge.
DRUNK WHITLEY BAY YOB TO PAY COMPENSATION FOR SMASHING CAB WINDSCREEN AFTER REFUSING TO PAY FARE
A drunk yob has been ordered to pay compensation after he refused to pay for a taxi fare then smashed the vehicle’s windscreen. Brandon Durning had been give a lift from Newcastle city centre to Whitley Bay and had already told the cabbie he had the cash to pay the £26 fare. A court heard, however, that the 20- year-old, who already has more than 50 offences on his appalling criminal record, became aggressive when he reached his destination and tried to walk away without coughing-up. As the driver turned the vehicle around, Durning returned and threw a beer

bottle towards the taxi, which missed. Undeterred, Durn- ing then picked up another bottle and hurled it at the cab’s windscreen, causing it to crack. North Tyneside Magistrates’ Court heard the terrified taxi driver drove around the corner in order to ring the police but was followed by Durning, who used a large stick to hit the windscreen again and damage it further. The police eventually
arrived and Durning was arrested. Now, the yob, of Whitley Bay, has been ordered to pay £250 compensation after pleading guilty to criminal dam- age and making-off without payment. The court heard that the windscreen cost £150 to repair and the victim’s taxi was off the road for a number of days. Magistrates were told that Durning was on a three-year community order at the time for an assault. Annalisa Moscardini, defending, said Durning suffered from serious mental health issues and had a low IQ and “lacked appreciation of the conse- quences of his actions.”
