down with the humour that I intended; such is the good relationship that we have down here.
However despite this I was able to briefly get an audio link going via a Heath Robinson method with my colleague Barry via the phone so I was eventually able to make some important points on access for taxis.
Another trade rep, Andy from City Cabs, also brought up some extremely important points on the whole scheme asking if the council had any data on taxi use in the area.
Of course this was not available because the council had not asked for it.
I know that the three main companies in Brighton; Streamline (of which I am a director), City Cabs and Radio Cabs could produce this data.... but no one from the council had bothered to ask.
Another very important point was raised by the head of the council’s ‘Safeguarding and Performance’ with regard to the safety of women who may have to walk to their homes because of restricted access to taxis - well spotted there Jo!
We all know how some LTNs have apparently failed in London which I was able to mention, but the response was that this is due to poor planning, which I have no doubt is true. But looking at the plan provided to us, what has been proposed in the draft plan (or should that be daft plan) will only cause more congestion and force cars to use other roads to access the proposed LTN because so many roads will have been blocked off.
I am very sure that some home owners in some of the streets are rubbing their hands together with the prospect of an increase in the value of their homes. But conversely, I am also very sure that some home owners have had the blood drained from their faces to their boots when looking at the devaluations.
However, we have a Green-led council here - I should stop there, but unfortunately my fingers just cannot resist in carrying on - and the impression we get is that the Greens do not like cars and that includes any type of propellant vehicle.
We have ‘some’ but not all Green councillors, who want everyone here to walk and cycle which is an unrealistic

objective. I won’t mention the full details of a disastrously installed bike lane that caused considerable congestion which was hastily installed during the pandemic, and that having done an FOI on the mislead- ing data that I found, I like to think that I contributed to its eventual removal. But that still leaves the horrible bike lane we have on the seafront that has increased journey time, increased fares, and produced a bottle- neck of shear frustration with everyone.
So what with this ill-thought proposed LTN, the bike lanes, the walking lanes (I kid you not) and a council that is pushing on with what can only be described as ‘Social Engineering’... I say roll on to the 2023 local elections!
Having said that though, we do have a huge number of students here who are allowed to vote, bless them, and with the state of the current government it looks like Brighton & Hove will remain a Green-led council with that student vote.
I’m just banking on the students’ ‘Posterior Hippocampi’ being a bit larger.
