But this recent event raises even bigger concerns - concerns of breaches of UKGDPR. Even local authorities will not supply home address details of drivers, even the DVSA has very strict access to data policies in place to protect licence holders, and this recent event highlights why!
With this in mind, I spoke to the driver directly, hoping to reassure him, hoping to rebuild his confidence, and to find out in more detail exactly how this happened, and the effect it has had on him, his family, and his confidence.
He openly described the situation to me, including the fact that he had, in the first instance, followed licensing conditions and taken the bag to the nearest police station. The reception staff had examined the contents, and refused to take it as lost property, since it had nothing of value inside, no phone, no ear pieces.
The only contents were a reading book; which means there is no possible way in which the bag could have been tracked electronically.
His children are scared, he is not sleeping due to stress and fear and his wife is worried for his safety. He actually said:
“I feel as though I have been raped, my home has been violated, my privacy and safety is gone!

“What if they come back, they have my address, they ran off when the police arrived, but who can say if they will come back. They could come back at any time!”
This situation could have been much more severe had he not been able to close the door, or if the police had not attended. This could have been a report of a driver and his family having been killed, the reason being unknown!
Whilst many may think that this is acceptable, it is far from being correct, legal, or safe for Uber to act in this way. In fact I am quite sure the Information Commissioner’s Office at
https://ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint/ would have some- thing to say about this.
Once again, we find that the Uber strapline: “where safety never stops” actually falls very short of being suitable, only providing one way safety, what about the driver safety!
This needs to be fixed, not tomorrow, not next week, not next month, this should NEVER have happened, and needs solving right now!
A UNIFIED TRADE IS A POWERFUL VOICE! NOW MORE THAN EVER WE NEED TO STAND TOGETHER!!
