A

s a new year begins, it is sobering to look back over the one just passed… and wonder what lies ahead. After civil war and conflict caused mass migration into Europe

from the Middle East, the horrors of Paris and Bamako in Mali were followed by more massacres in locations as geographically and culturally diverse as California’s San Bernardino and Aksu in China’s remote Xinjiang Province. Meanwhile, the backdrop to all this has been economic instability and political wrangling that has only exacerbated the negative impact of the situation. What are we to make of this, and what are the implications for the international business community? There is a growing conversation among business travellers about terrorism – both domestic and international – and its effect on our travel experience, and this is something we will be investigating in future issues of the magazine. However, despite the caution, outwardly it’s business as usual, with global development as bullish and eagerly embraced as ever. To back up that statement, in this issue we explore the economic aspirations of cities as far apart as Toronto (p22), Tokyo (p38) and Copenhagen (p56), while also looking at the still booming hotel industry in Asia (p28) and the increasing popularity of whisky bars in the Far East (p62). It is clear that the modern world of international commerce and

cultural diversity will never be cowed or conquered by a small minority of ignorant, medieval-minded fanatics – but at the same time, it is important that we all contribute in any way we can to a global mindset of open-mindedness and engagement. I wish you all a peaceful, healthy and prosperous new year.
