Susannah Rigg explores three Mexican destinations that offer adventure, ancient history and gleaming facilities
M
exico is a modern, evolving country that also has its roots firmly linked to its Mesoamerican past – business travellers can start the day in a cutting-edge conference centre and end it traversing an archaeological site once inhabited by the ancient
Maya or Aztec civilisations. A popular tourist destination, visits to Mexico rose by 12.6 per cent in
the first quarter of 2018 compared to the previous year. Its business travel options were once more popular with businesses from the US, Canada and South America. In addition, new flight routes, increased modern infrastructure and a favourable exchange rate have put Mexico on the map for European business owners too. For Jorge Paredes from destination management company Sat Mexico
Corporation, the cultural offering of Mexico sets it apart from anywhere else in the world. “Here you have direct contact with the past, present and future from the moment you arrive in any part of Mexico,” he says, noting that automotive, food and beverage, and pharmaceutical companies are particularly attracted to the nation for conferences. Te choice of bustling modern cities or paradisiacal beaches, combined
with the wide variety of venues and incentive activities all serve to make Mexico an increasingly attractive business travel option.
CANCUN Once a sleepy fishing village, Cancun has evolved into one of the world’s top holiday destinations. With average temperatures ranging between 23 and 28 degrees, its 21km of white sands and turquoise seas attract 7.2 million visitors each year. Cheap, direct charter flights from Europe, plus an airport expansion that will allow for 25 million arrivals, are also making the nation a more affordable option for long-haul business travel. Te luxurious all-inclusive resorts that sit upon the Caribbean coast
make Cancun extremely appealing. Its hotels are fully equipped for business travellers, with modern meeting rooms and quality catering. Incentive options include visits to local Mayan archaeological sites,
boat trips and, for adventurous types, diving in ancient underground sinkholes. Te bar and nightclub scene is also buzzing for corporates who want to let their hair down and enjoy a fun night out with colleagues.
MEXICO CITY Te Mexican capital has some truly impressive offerings for business travellers. A central airport hub for 20 million international and domestic arrivals, incredible restaurants, contemporary conference centres and unique cultural experiences all serve to make the destination an attractive option.
