Poetry event at historic library
TWO internationally renowned poets performed at Gladstone’s Library, as UK Poet Laureate Simon Armitage and National Poet of Wales Hanan Issa read a selection of poems. The hour-long reading took place on 23 March and saw both poets touching on themes of home and place in the Flint- shire library’s reading rooms. Simon was there as part of his UK library
tour, and said: “It has been amazing and just a privilege to go into these places where there’s a lot of expectation and lot of preparation. It’s also a privilege to think that my chosen art form can bring a lot of joy to people.” Gladstone’s Library’s Andrea Russell said: “It was wonderful to be part of the Laureate’s Library Tour and to welcome Hanan and Simon to Gladstone’s Library for the first time – and we hope it’s not their last. Our audience was enthralled by the poems which were a mixture of heartfelt, challenging and amusing.”

Books for little rebels
SEVEN titles have been shortlisted for this year’s Little Rebels Award, highlighting social justice issues for young readers. The annual award celebrates “radical fiction” for young people and this year’s shorlist features a range of books that tackle inequality in all its forms. The seven short- listed titles are Ajay & The Mumbai Sun by Varsha Shah (Chicken House Books), Fight Back by A. M. Dassu (Scho- lastic), I Am Nefertiti by Annemarie Anang and Natelle Quek (Five Quills), Mayor Bunny’s Chocolate Town by Elys Dolan (Oxford University Press), Needle by Patrice Lawrence (Barrington Stoke), The Secret Of Haven Point by Lisette Auton (Puffin Books/PRH), and You Need To Chill! by Juno Dawson and Laura Hughes (Farshore). More than 140 books were submitted to the awards from 40 publishers, with the winning author receiving a cash prize of £2,000 funded by the Marxist Socialist funder, The Barry Amiel and Norman Melburn Trust. Free downloadable reading guides for each of the short- listed titles will be available through the Little Rebels Award website, enabling educators and carers to discuss and plan activities around the social justice topics raised in the shortlist. The award is administered by the Letterbox Library and Housmans Bookshops, and the winner will be revealed at a ceremony in June, and you can find out more about the award at
